  • Patent number: 7222877
Abstract: An air bag assembly (80) configured to deploy in a generally vertical direction from the roof of a vehicle, comprising: an air bag (100) having at least one inflatable chamber (110, 112) defined by a material so configured, the inflatable chamber including a top (top end) and an opposite bottom (bottom end); first mounting elements (192, 196) for mounting the air bag to a mounting surface such as the roof of the vehicle and for providing, proximate the top end of the inflatable chamber, a wide and stable base portion from which the air bag extends; an external tether enveloping the material forming the inflatable chamber and positioned on opposing sides of the inflatable chamber, the external tether connected to the air bag proximate the bottom end of the chamber and including respective tether ends connected to the first mounting elements.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 31, 2003
Date of Patent: May 29, 2007
    Assignee: Key Safety Systems, Inc.
Inventors: Pongdet P. Wipasuramonton, Charles S. E. Walczak, Shakir M. Salmo
  • Patent number: 6802530
Abstract: A rollover air bag system comprising: at least a first inflatable first chamber, the air bag adapted to be mounted within a passenger compartment of a vehicle in a manner such that when the air bag is inflated the first inflatable chamber is positioned to receive and protect the head of an occupant, an accumulator chamber located downstream of the first chamber, the accumulator chamber initially maintained at a negative pressure relative to the inflated first chamber, wherein in order to restrict the pressure in the first chamber from increasing upon impact with a body part of the occupant, the inflation gas in the first chamber is allowed to be pushed into the accumulator chamber.

  • Patent number: 6749220
Abstract: A safety apparatus including a rollover air bag to protect an occupant of a vehicle during the rolling-over of the vehicle, the rollover air bag comprising: first and second panels of woven material that has been coated on at least one side thereof to reduce the porosity of material to substantially zero, the panels sewn together along a first sewn seam to define an inflatable portion of the air bag; seam sealing means for sealing the first sewn seam so that the internal pressure of the air bag at about five (5) seconds from the time the air bag is initially inflated is about 35 Kpa (about 3.5 psi).
