  • Patent number: 4394408
Abstract: An apparatus and method for applying an adhesive to the edge of the can by inserting the can into the adhesive to its top surface and rotating the can 360.degree. or more, then past the edge of a doctor roll to remove excess adhesive in a selected region and then advancing the cans through an induction heater in a continuous motion until the can reaches a discharge station where it is released.

    Assignee: The Continental Group, Inc.
Inventors: John Walter, Donald J. Roth, Charles S. Kubis
  • Patent number: 4392764
Abstract: This relates to the necking-in of a free end portion of a container, and particularly a very thin wall can body, utilizing necking-in tooling. The tooling differs from conventional tooling in that in addition to the necking-in operation, it also serves radially inwardly to turn the free edge portion of the container body to facilitate leading-in of the necked-in portion into another tubular container component with the in-turned free edge portion also providing a section modulus which effects stiffening and form retaining of the free end portion. In addition, it has been found that conventional necking-in tooling for aluminum can bodies having a free edge thickness on the order of 0.0075 inch will not perform satisfactorily on like can bodies having a free edge thickness on the order of 0.006 inch, and that surprisingly by increasing an adjacent radius, the tooling will perform satisfactorily.

  • Patent number: 4362254
Abstract: This relates to a neck structure on a domed container end for receiving a thermoplastic material closure. It particularly relates to containers having very thin walls on the order of 6-9 mils and wherein the container is formed of a metal having a grain which generally defines a fold line. In order to avoid undue deformation of the lower part of the usual ring which receives the closure body, the domed end immediately adjacent an encircling ring is provided with an upstanding bead which is shock absorbent and functions resiliently to reinforce the lower part of the ring and to restore it to its original configuration after the body of the closure has been pressed through the ring.

  • Patent number: 4197732
Abstract: This relates to the handling of thin soft temper material during the feeding thereof and in formation of such material into individual components in a punch press. Most particularly, a pull tab formed of a plastics material-aluminum foil laminate is being formed. In order to control the movement of the stock through the punch press, the stock is longitudinally stiffened by the formation of longitudinal ribs therein. The ribs are preferably formed by the stock feeding mechanism. The work product is blanked and formed substantially in its entirety in regions of the stock outside of the stiffening rib areas and prior to the final severing of the work product from the stock, the stiffening ribs are flattened. In the separation of the work product from the stock, there is material removal in a punching operation along the areas previously containing the stiffening ribs.
