Patent number: 10016276Abstract: According to one representative embodiment, a method of treating aortic insufficiency comprises delivering a support structure to a position around the leaflets of a native heart valve. The support structure comprises an annular body defining an interior and at least one projection extending radially inwardly from the annular body. An expandable prosthetic heart valve can be advanced into the native heart valve and into the interior of the annular body. The prosthetic heart valve can be expanded into contact with the leaflets of the native valve, thereby causing the leaflets of the native valve to be frictionally secured between an inner surface of the annular body and an outer surface of the prosthetic heart valve and causing the at least one projection and a portion of one of the leaflets contacted by the at least one projection to extend into an opening of the frame of the prosthetic valve.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2013Date of Patent: July 10, 2018Assignee: Edwards Lifesciences CorporationInventors: William C. Brunnett, Charles Stanislaus

Patent number: 9622863Abstract: This application relates to methods, systems, and apparatus for replacing native heart valves with prosthetic heart valves and treating valvular insufficiency. In a representative embodiment, a support frame configured to be implanted in a heart valve comprises an annular main body formed by a plurality of angled struts, the main body including a plurality of peaks formed by the intersection of respective adjacent struts. The support frame further comprises one or more leaflet-engaging mechanisms configured to engage leaflets of the heart valve. The support frame can be radially expandable and collapsible.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2014Date of Patent: April 18, 2017Assignee: Edwards Lifesciences CorporationInventors: Emil Karapetian, Charles Stanislaus, Gregory Bak-Boychuk, Christopher Olson, Cristobal Hernandez, William Brunnett, Netanel Benichou, Lauren Freschauf, Alex Siegel

Patent number: 9186157Abstract: A surgical cutting instrument including an outer tube having a bearing sleeve disposed within a lumen thereof, along with an inner wire assembly extending through the outer tube and the bearing sleeve. A cutting tip is connected to the inner wire assembly distal the outer tube. Conversely, a coupling chuck is connected to a proximal section of the inner wire assembly, with a housing maintaining the outer tube and the coupling chuck. When mounted to a motor, the inner wire assembly is rotated to effectuate a surgical cutting procedure at the cutting tip, with the bearing sleeve supporting the inner wire assembly relative to the outer tube during rotation.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2013Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: Medtronic Xomed, Inc.Inventors: William C. Brunnett, Charles Stanislaus

Patent number: 9113945Abstract: A surgical tissue cutting instrument comprises a tubular outer member, an inner member rotatably disposed within the outer member and having a cutting element, a handpiece, and an irrigation system. The irrigation system includes an irrigation channel composed of a first irrigation passage within the handpiece and a second irrigation passage within the thickness of the annular wall of the outer member, and a sleeve disposed over a front end of the handpiece and over the outer member adjacent an outlet opening of the second irrigation passage. The sleeve allows communication through the outlet opening of the second irrigation passage and an inlet port of the first passage. The inlet port is connectible with a source of irrigation fluid.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2013Date of Patent: August 25, 2015Assignee: Medtronic Xomed, Inc.Inventors: Aayush Malla, Charles Stanislaus, Joshua David Rubin, William C.
