Patent number: 5865185Abstract: A smoking article is provided in which a replaceable tobacco flavor unit containing tobacco flavor material is electrically heated by a set of permanent reusable heaters to evolve flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form for delivery to a smoker. Each heater heats only a portion of the available tobacco flavor material so that a plurality of individual puffs of tobacco flavor substance can be delivered sequentially to the smoker. The replaceable tobacco flavor unit can also include a filter to reduce the effect of residual aerosol which settles or condenses on the permanent portions of the article and which can result in undesirable flavor generation when reheated. A method and apparatus for manufacturing the replaceable tobacco flavor unit is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1995Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Alfred L. Patent number: 5665262Abstract: A cylindrical tube is provided of a mechanically strong and flexible electrical conductor such as a metal and has a plurality of separated regions. An electrically insulating layer such as a ceramic is applied on the outer surface except for one exposed portion. Electrically resistive heaters are then applied to the insulated regions and are electrically connected at one end to the underlying electrical conducting region. The electrical conductor is connected to the negative terminal of a power source. The other end of all the heaters are adapted to be connected to the positive terminal of the source. Accordingly, an electrically resistive heating circuit is formed wherein the tube serves as a common for all of the heating elements. The tubular heater can comprise an exposed end hub with a plurality of blades extending therefrom. Each blade can have an individual heater deposited thereon. Alternatively, every other blade can have a heater deposited thereon.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Mohammad R. Patent number: 5322075Abstract: A smoking article is provided in which a flavor-generating medium is heated electrically to release an aerosol for inhalation by a consumer. The smoking article includes a heater having resistive heating elements printed on a flexible substrate. The heater can be manufactured by circuit board mass production techniques, and can be formed to fit inside an article of the same shape and size as a conventional cigarette. Alternatively, the heater comprises an array of heating elements onto which charges of flavor-generating medium are deposited. The heating elements are connected in a manner which allows the temperature increase in the heater to be concentrated in individually selected heating elements, and requires a minimal number of electrical conductors.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1992Date of Patent: June 21, 1994Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Seetharama C. Patent number: 5142917Abstract: An apparatus (3) is installed in place of a cigarette support, for example. The force applied by loads (22, 23) to a force-measurement cell (31), mounted on a motorized slider (33) and moving parallel to said loads, is measured as a function of the displacement. A processing unit plots a graph depicting the force measured as a function of the displacement; any imperfection of the surface condition of the slides (22a, 23a) can be spotted on the graph. The movement-checking method and apparatus apply to the checking of any rectilinear movement of a guided object subjected to a constant force, and particularly to the checking of the state of wear of the slides of equipment for measuring the compressibility of articles produced in the tobacco industry.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1991Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: Fabriques de Tabac Reunies, S.A.Inventors: Gian P. Patent number: 4974825Abstract: An envelope feeder (20) for use in a photographic order-finishing station, including a base (22) to which a retaining plate (28) is mounted. A stack-holding tray (30) is biased toward the retaining plate to compress a stack (18) of envelopes placed therebetween for feeding. Suction heads (50) move arcuately to contact and grip the outermost envelope (36) on the stack by application of a partial vacuum, and the move back to peel and lift a portion of that envelope from the stack. A shuttle assembly (52) with a plurality of narrow shuttle fingers (108) is included for insertion between the partially lifted outermost envelope (36) and the underlying envelope (68) to split any adhesions formed between them and separate the outermost envelope from the stack.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1988Date of Patent: December 4, 1990Assignee: Ciba-Geigy CorporationInventors: Milan Bizic, David L.
