  • Publication number: 20140243179
Abstract: A second fold roller assembly is provided. The assembly includes a pair of second fold rollers, each supported on a support element, the pair of second fold rollers forming a nip therebetween for transporting a book, the pair of second fold rollers being separated by a gap at the nip. The assembly also includes one or more actuators coupled to the support elements and a controller coupled to the one or more actuators. The controller controls the one or more actuators to vary a size of the gap, wherein the size of the gap is controlled to be a first size when a leading edge of the book enters the nip and the size of the gap is controlled to be a second size after the leading edge of the book has exited the nip and while a portion of the book is in the nip, the second size being greater than the first size.

  • Patent number: 6279890
Abstract: A printing press having a jaw mode assembly and a rotary mode assembly with a single folding cylinder adapted to feed either the jaw mode assembly or the rotary mode assembly is disclosed. A moving web of material is initially trained about the folding cylinder and cut into a signatures which are then temporarily held on the folding cylinder. A folding blade extends from the folding cylinder to initiate a fold in each signature and direct each signature to either the jaw mode assembly or the rotary mode assembly. The timing of the folding blade is coordinated and adjusted using an indexable spider assembly to feed either the jaw mode assembly or the rotary mode assembly.

  • Patent number: 6131904
Abstract: A fly stripping mechanism for stripping sheet-like objects such as printed material from a rotating fly assembly having a plurality of fly pockets is disclosed. A cam adjacent the fly assembly remains stationary as the fly assembly rotates. A lever is disposed adjacent each fly pocket and is also pivotally mounted to the fly assembly. A cam follower is connected to each lever. As the fly assembly rotates, the cam follower follows the contour of the cam. The contour of the cam slows the rotation of the cam followers relative to the rotational speed of the fly assembly. The slowed rotation of the cam followers in turn causes an end portion of the lever to move from a position adjacent a rearward portion of the fly pocket toward a forward portion of the fly pocket, thereby ejecting printed material from the fly pocket.

  • Patent number: 5797319
Abstract: A drive device (10) for a folder in a printing press having a folding blade mounted to a folding blade shaft (12). A drive gear (16) drives a folding blade shaft gear (14). The drive device also includes a plunger (24) having an intermediate gear (28) between the gear (14) of the folding blade shaft (12) and the drive gear (16), and a device for moving the plunger (24) between a first longitudinal position and a second longitudinal position. In the first longitudinal position, the intermediate gear (28) meshes with the folding blade shaft gear (14). In the second longitudinal position, the intermediate gear (28) is out of register with the drive gear (16) to prevent the folding blade shaft gear (14) from being driven by the drive gear 16. The drive device (10) may also include a cam (38) and an indexing ring (56) operable in response to axial movement of the plunger (24) to cause the intermediate gear (28) to be moved from the first longitudinal position to the second longitudinal position.

  • Patent number: 5780384
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to supported mono charged cation delta manganese dioxide hydrate having a noble metal on the surface thereof, and to the use thereof for low temperature oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly oxygen-containing VOCs. The present invention further relates to the use of the supported catalysts to reduce the amount of VOCs present in waste gases produced by processes such as baking, brewing, and flexographic printing. Catalysts prepared from the supported manganese-containing catalysts have increased resistance to poisoning in the presence of catalyst contaminants, e.g., sulfur containing compounds.
