Patent number: 5763876Abstract: Generally, the present invention provides a device for heating the sample stream inlet of an ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) sensor. The heating device increases the temperature of the sample stream inlet surface to reduce the amount of time between adsorption and desorption taking place on the surface. This greatly improves the ability of the IMS sensor to follow rapidly changing analyte concentration levels. An alternate preferred embodiment of the present invention provides a flow smoothing device for decreasing the turbulence present in the fluid flow entering the IMS sensor's carrier stream inlet. This flow smoothing insert permits increasing the fluid flow rate entering the IMS sensor's carrier stream inlet to levels which maximize the IMS sensor's measurement sensitivity without causing mixing of the sample and carrier fluid stream flows.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1996Date of Patent: June 9, 1998Assignee: Mine Safety Appliances CompanyInventors: John Michael Alfred Pertinarides, Alexander Semenovich Tarassov, Byron Lee Carnahan, Charles W. Patent number: 5736739Abstract: Generally, the present invention provides a recirculating filtration system for use with a transportable ion mobility spectrometer in gas chromatography applications. The transportable recirculating filtration system comprises a pump and a set of filters and flow sensors connected to an ion mobility spectrometry sensor having a gas chromatograph column at its inlet. The IMS sensor's outlet flow is cleaned by the filters and recirculated by the pump back into the IMS sensor as the carrier fluid stream flow. A portion of the IMS sensor's outlet flow equal to the amount of flow introduced into the sensor as the sample is exhausted from the filtration system to maintain a constant total flow volume through the system as the sample is being analyzed. Preferably, the multicapillary column is sealed to a heated transfer line leading to the sample stream inlet of the IMS sensor. The transfer line is preferably maintained at a temperature 10.degree. C.-40.degree. C.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1996Date of Patent: April 7, 1998Assignee: Mine Safety Appliances CompanyInventors: Robert E. Uber, Viktor Kouznetsov, Alexander Tarassov, Byron L. Patent number: 5343179Abstract: A solenoid operated circuit breaker trip device has a base defining a guide channel and an actuator that slides in the guide channel and interacts with a contact breaking mechanism having a trip bar operable to make or break electrical contacts. A spring biases the actuator toward the trip bar. A solenoid on the base electromagnetically displaces a plunger along a linear path and is coupled to a trigger having a latching surface that holds or releases the actuator. The guide channel runs parallel to the path of the plunger, adjacent the solenoid. The trigger is L-shaped and pivoted on a pivot pin between two legs of its L-shape, on an axis transverse to the path of the plunger. One of the two trigger legs is coupled to the plunger, and the other has an engagement surface that is moved behind a complementary surface of the actuator to selectively block its displacement. The base can be a slotted frame attached to the solenoid or a molded housing having an interior cavity for receiving the solenoid.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1993Date of Patent: August 30, 1994Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventors: Charles W. Patent number: 5290982Abstract: A pair of lock links straddling and pivoted on the same pin as the latchable cradle of a circuit breaker follow the toggle device of the breaker either by riding on the toggle knee pin or through a pin which bears against the edges of the toggle arms. The lock links have extensions which engage the handle yoke to prevent the handle from being moved to the off position when the circuit breaker contacts are welded closed causing the toggle device to remain erected.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1993Date of Patent: March 1, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Henry R. Beck, Charles W. Pipich

Patent number: 5165532Abstract: A circuit breaker includes an interlock which prevents movement of the handle to the off position when the contacts are welded closed. The interlock includes a pair of floating links which jam between slots in arms of the yoke of a spring powered operating mechanism which carries the handle, and recesses in the rotatable cross-bar carrying the movable contact arms. The recesses are offset from the rotational axis of cross-bar so that an attempt to move the switch to the off position generates a moment which will break open lightly welded contacts.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1991Date of Patent: November 24, 1992Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Charles W. Pipich, William E. Beatty, Jr.

Patent number: 4579349Abstract: A gland seal for a dynamoelectric machine which utilizes a passage through a ring member for conducting a relatively low pressure gas between a first axial face and a second axial face of the ring member. The seal also includes a relief portion in the first axial face whereby the ring member is forced against the high pressure side of the gland seal thereby diminishing the flow of oil to the high pressure side which is desirable in a hydrogen-cooled generator system.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1984Date of Patent: April 1, 1986Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Charles W. Pipich, Robert R. Young

Patent number: 4458166Abstract: An electrical connection system is provided for the salient poles of a hydrogenerator rotor. The system provides for identically wound salient poles to be connected in a manner that achieves opposite electromagnetic polarity of adjacent salient poles while eliminating the requirements of crossover connections during final assembly of the poles to the rotor or during field replacement of salient poles.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1981Date of Patent: July 3, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Richard D. Nathenson, Charles W. Pipich, Joseph R. Kopnitsky, deceased

Patent number: 4365176Abstract: A liquid cooling system for a dynamoelectric machine's rotor winding. Concentrically arranged intake and outtake coolant pipes extend a desired axial distance within a centrally arranged bore in the rotor. Both pipes are joined to a distribution block also disposed in the rotor bore. The distribution block transmits coolant from the intake pipe to arcuately-shaped coolant distribution manifolds through radially-directed pipes and transmits coolant from arcuately-shaped coolant collection manifolds to the outtake pipe through radially-directed pipes. The manifolds are fluidly connected to the rotor winding either by rigid non-conducting tubing having bends therein for permitting thermal expansion thereof or flexible insulation tubing such as Teflon.RTM..Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1981Date of Patent: December 21, 1982Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Richard D. Nathenson, Charles W. Pipich, Joseph R. Kopnitsky, deceased
