  • Patent number: 5352066
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an anchor assembly for installing a threaded mine-roof bolt under tension in a bore hole formed in underground passageways, mines, and the like. The anchor assembly includes a two compartment resin cartridge and a mechanical expansion unit. A support collar is threaded on the bolt to restrict axial movement of the mechanical expansion unit. The mechanical expansion unit includes a camming plug and an expansion shell. The expansion shell has a plurality of fingers extending upwardly from an annular collar. Spaces or slots are formed between adjacent fingers. Each of the plurality of fingers include a vertically extending rib for forming channels between the external surfaces of the fingers and the side walls of the bore hole to permit the free flow of resin. The side surfaces of the fingers adjacent the uppermost portion thereof are tapered so that substantially V-shaped notches are formed between adjacent fingers.

  • Patent number: 4859118
Abstract: A mine roof support anchor and process for installing the same. The anchor comprises a pair of wedge members, each of which has tapered surfaces adapted for interengagement to effect expansion of the shell into gripping engagement with the mine roof. The wedge members are joined by a connector at one end thereof. Upon threading the roof bolt through one wedge member, the upper end of the bolt engages the connector, thereby effecting upper movement of the other wedge member and downward movement of the one wedge member, causing rapid expansion of the shell. External ribs on one of the wedge members engage the mine roof after partial expansion of the shell to limit upward movement of the wedge member. A vertical rib on the wedge member through which the roof bolt is threaded prevents rotation thereof during the rotation of the bolt through the anchor.

  • Patent number: 4429560
Abstract: Apparatus and method for making a transition plate for a mine roof truss from a strip of metal includes a die set having a first and second station. In the first station the strip of metal is bent downwardly at its sides, a notch is sheared in both sides of the strip and two holes are pierced through the strip. In the second station the transition plate is completed by bending the leading portion of the strip into an "M" shaped saddle portion, the strip is sheared transversely and bent downwardly at its trailing end.

  • Patent number: 4395161
Abstract: A generally rectangular transition plate for connecting inclined and horizontal chords of a mine roof truss has one face defining a generally flat planar plate bearing surface adapted to be closely received against a mine roof. The sides and one end of the plate are bent outwardly from the one face. A first opening in the plate adjacent the one end is adapted to receive a mine roof bolt. A second opening in the plate is located adjacent the other end of the plate. A saddle portion extends between the other end of the plate and the second opening and is adapted to receive a truss tie member. The plate has a low profile and sufficient rigidity to sustain the forces present in the truss.

  • Patent number: 4345492
Abstract: An inexpensive method to make a punch for piercing or forming metal includes cutting a piece from a bar or rod, applying a phosphate and lubricant coating to the piece, extruding one end of the piece into a polygonal shape, annealing the piece, press or machine relieving the piece, machining the end of the piece having the polygonal shape and heat treating the piece to the proper hardness.

  • Patent number: 4149446
Abstract: A load indicator washer in the form of a parallelogram includes flat bearing surfaces on one of its faces, the bearing surfaces extend inwardly from two opposite ends of the washer, a slightly arcuate portion extends between and connects the bearing surfaces, a hole to receive a fastener extends through the washer at about the midpoint of the washer, and a conical portion symmetrically positioned about the hole, terminating short of the ends of the washer, and extending outwardly from the arcuate portion. The arcuate portion and the conical portion act as springs, deflect under a load, and thereby indicate such load. The load indicator washer is particularly adapted for use with a mine roof bolt.
