  • Publication number: 20030206495
Abstract: An alarm clock of the analog type with hands for indicating the time includes a battery, a housing, a dial with time indicia disposed in the housing and an illumination module disposed adjacently to the dial. The illumination module has one or more recesses defined in an edge with one or more light sources disposed in the recesses to provide illumination into the module. The illumination module has edges and a back surface with light reflective properties to reflect light in the interior of the module and out the front surface and through the dial to provide night lighting exterior to the clock. Preferably, the module has an ovate shape such that the recesses and light sources are disposed outside of the dial area. A light sensor senses the ambient lighting conditions and activates and deactivates the light source. A dimmer control adjusts the desired level of illumination. A three position switch controls the alarm clock between alarm only, night light only, and both alarm and night light modes of operation.

  • Publication number: 20030202558
Abstract: A wireless cooking thermometer consisting of a transmitter unit and a receiver unit. The transmitter unit senses the cooking temperature of food item and periodically transmits the temperature as an RF signal to the receiver unit. The receiver unit compares the current food temperature to preprogrammed values representative of different levels of doneness and provides visual and audible alerts when the food temperature reaches one level of doneness below the selected level, when the food reaches the selected level of doneness, and again when the food reaches an overcooked level. A display on the receiver unit has an ascending bar graph to visually depict the progress of cooking through the various cooking levels. The display also has indicia to display the type of meat selected, the current temperature of the sensing probe, the temperature corresponding to the selected level of doneness and an overcook indicator.

  • Publication number: 20030174586
Abstract: A clock with a display of the liquid crystal display (LCD) type provides indicia such as time, day, month, year and temperature, and also provides sufficient back lighting to operate as a night light. The clock has a reflector module disposed behind the LCD display with a generally clear module element that may have an engraved back surface for improved light dispersion from one or more light sources, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). The module element has edges with reflective properties, a light reflective material disposed behind said module element and one or more light sources disposed along an edge thereof. The edge of the module element preferably has a notch or recess for positioning the light source therein. The invention also includes reflector modules for clocks.

  • Patent number: 6552833
Abstract: An optical wavelength division multiplex (WDM) demultiplexer can be provided in substantially passive form. In one embodiment a wavelength filter separates alternate channels to provide a first output containing even-numbered channels and a second output containing odd-numbered channels, each output having channels separated by a bandwidth twice the channel separation bandwidth of the original WDM signal.

  • Publication number: 20020163691
Abstract: A wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing device is presented utilizing a polarization-based filter to separate odd and even wavelengths, or upper and lower channels of an input optical signal. The wavelength filter first converts the input signal to a predetermined polarization. A series of birefringent waveplates provide a polarization-dependent optical transmission function such that the polarized beam is decomposed into a first beam component carrying the first spectral band at a first polarization and a second beam component carrying the second spectral band at a second, orthogonal polarization. A beam displacer spatially separates the beam components into a pair of orthogonally-polarized beams. A quarter-wave plate converts these orthogonally-polarized beams into a pair of circularly-polarized beams, which are reflected by a mirror back along parallel optical paths through the quarter-wave plate, beam displacer, and waveplates.

  • Patent number: 6429962
Abstract: An optical equalizer for use primarily with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier has an initial polarizer that convert the input beam to a predetermined polarization, followed by a series of dynamically-adjustable sinusoidal filters that provide attenuation as a sinusoidal function of beam wavelength. Each of the sinusoidal filters has a first liquid crystal cell adjustably rotating the polarization of the beam from the preceding polarizer. This is followed by a second optical element that retards the beam as a sinusoidal function of beam wavelength. For example, the second optical element can be a birefringent crystal that provided a fixed degree of retardance to the beam and a second liquid crystal cell that provides a variable degree of retardance, thereby allowing adjustment of the center frequency of the sinusoidal function. Finally, a third liquid crystal cell adjustably rotates the polarization of the beam.

  • Patent number: 6426816
Abstract: The inventive filter forms a four filtering stage device from two filtering stages and a reflective stage. This greatly reduces the noise level in a WDM signal, wherein the signal is one of the odd channels and the even channels, while the noise is present on the other of the odd channels and the even channels. The first stage separates the WDM signal and noise into their polarization components, rotates the components of one of the signal and the noise, and recombines the components of the signal, while blocking a portion of the noise. This output is passed to the second stage which repeats the operation of the first stage. The output of the second stage is then reflected by the reflecting stage back to the second stage, and subsequently the first stage, for processing in reverse order. The inventive filter, via the mirror in the reflecting stage, reduce dispersion of the light during processing.

  • Patent number: 6396609
Abstract: A stacked waveplate device that performs an optical wavelength filtering function is described which provides dispersion with a first magnitude and a first sign for a first optical path having a first output polarization and which provides a second dispersion with a substantially equal but oppositely-signed dispersion for a second optical path defining an output having an orthogonal polarization to the polarization of said first output path. Optical paths are configured to pass through first and second stacked waveplate devices sequentially with the optical dispersion of said second device having an approximately equal magnitude but opposite sign compared to the optical dispersion of the first optical stacked waveplate devices so as to provide canceling or compensation of optical dispersion.

  • Patent number: 6343275
Abstract: A software system business-to-business Web commerce (Web business, or e-business) and automates to the greatest degree possible, in a unified and synergistic fashion and using best proven business practices, the various aspects of running a successful and profitable business. Web business and business automation are both greatly facilitated using a computing model based on a single integrated database management system (DBMS) that is either Web-enabled or provided with a Web front-end. The Web provides a window into a “seamless” end-to-end internal business process. The effect of such integration on the business cycle is profound, allowing the sale of virtually anything in a transactional context (goods, services, insurance, subscriptions, etc.) to be drastically streamlined.
