Abstract: A solar-powered mechanical keyboard including a keyboard body with a plurality of keys selectable by key press over a solar cell layer located beneath the keyboard body for absorbing the ambient light. The plurality of keys is configured to travel downward to make a contact with conductive traces of the conductive layer. Layers above the solar cells can be transparent or translucent materials, effectively hiding the solar technology while allowing efficient energy conversion and maintaining tactile feedback or “click feel”.

The one or more navigation keys may be configured to move a cursor on a display device associated to a computing device or select one or more user interface items on the display device. The remote controller unit may include a fingerprint input component arranged in the navigation keypad area. A key mat is sandwiched between the first section and the PCB, the key mat having a plurality of fixed keys and a plurality of interchangeable keys, each key protruding from the key's corresponding slot on the first section. Each interchangeable key has a unique identity, such that when each interchangeable key is replaced onto another slot on the first section, the interchangeable key's unique identity remains with the interchangeable key.
