  • Patent number: 5261022
Abstract: An optical waveguide is disclosed which comprises a substrate of A12O3 and a silica glass film of SiO2 applied thereon. The glass film has between 35-90 mol % SiO2. The device may be used in conjunction with electronics on the same substrate to form opto-electronic interconnections. The invention may also be used to apply a thin film glass glaze to a ceramic substrate.

  • Patent number: 5064266
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed whereby channel waveguides are formed to have substantially circular cross-section shapes to more closely match the circular cross-section shape of a typical optical fiber. Rectangular cross-section channel waveguides are heated to create surface tension between the core and cladding layers resulting in the rectangular shape changing to a substantially circular shape. An over cladding layer may be added to the circular cross-section waveguide. A method is also disclosed whereby monolithic lenses may be formed from the same circular cross-section waveguides on a common substrate, simultaneously, to provide substantially perfectly aligned lenses and waveguides that are not prone to alignment and bonding problems of discrete lenses.

  • Patent number: 5059475
Abstract: An integrated optoelectrical circuit is described. An apparatus and method are disclosed whereby planar optical waveguides are formed on Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, other ceramics, silicon, silica, and other glass substrates that are thin film wired. An interface coating of silicon or silicon dioxide is applied to a surface of the thin film wired substrates using a low temperature deposition process such as sputtering or chemical vapor deposition. Glass cladding and core layers are deposited onto the thin film coating using a flame hydrolysis deposition technique. With this invention, channel waveguides and integrated optical circuits can be formed on a common substrate with electronic IC chips.
