Publication number: 20040205442Abstract: The present invention more efficiently retrieves and processes data stored on an optical disk in a DVD-ROM format. Generally, the retrieval and processing of data includes inner and outer code error correction for a Reed-Solomon product like code and an error detection process for evaluating an extent of errors in a sector of data. For this device, the sector of data is encoded within a plurality of inner codes and parts of plural sectors encoded within each outer code. The device calculates an initial and an intermediate error detection value for data within the sector. The target for the error detection value is non-zero because the data within the sector are scrambled. If there is a match between the initial or intermediate error detection value, the sector can be presumed to be free of errors.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 26, 2004Publication date: October 14, 2004Applicant: MediaTek, Inc.Inventors: Cheng-Te Chuang, Eric Huang

Patent number: 6032243Abstract: A data-transfer interconnection is devised for signal and data transfer between a CD-ROM decoder and a buffer memory associated with the CD-ROM decoder. In particular, the CD-ROM decoder including a data I/O port for data transfer of a total of a first number of bits and the buffer memory including a data I/O port for data transfer of a total of a second number of bits, where the second number is greater than the first number. One example of the use of this data-transfer interconnection is to allow an 8-bit CD-ROM decoder to gain access to a 16-bit DRAM buffer memory. The data-transfer interconnection is suitable for use on Fast Page-Mode DRAMs and Extended Data Out DRAMs. Each word of the 16-bit data in the DRAM is divided into a high-segment portion and a low-segment portion, which two segments can be accessed respectively through the control by a high-segment column-address strobe signal and a low-segment column-address strobe signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1997Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: United Microelectronics Corp.Inventor: Cheng-Te Chuang

Patent number: 6003151Abstract: Data read out from a mass storage unit are provided as a serial data stream in parallel to both a buffer memory and an error detection circuit. The read out data are stored within the buffer memory. At the same time, the error detection circuit performs an error detection operation on the serial data stream read out from the mass storage unit. The error detection operation consists of dividing a segment of the serial data stream corresponding to a data block by the error check polynomial and determining the remainder of the division operation. The remainder from this initial error division operation is stored. Error correction is then performed on the data stored in the buffer memory, for example using a Reed-Solomon code. When erroneous bytes are identified by the error correction circuitry, the error equations are solved to determine the error pattern and then the erroneous byte is overwritten in the buffer memory.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Mediatek Inc.Inventor: Cheng-Te Chuang
