Patent number: 9124127Abstract: A method is provided for detecting islanding conditions in an electric power network which includes a plurality of sub-networks. The sub-networks include at least one power electrical unit and are separable from each other and a main grid supplying the network by switching devices. The method includes determining topological information of at least one sub-network of interest, detecting islanding conditions in at least one sub-network of interest on the basis of the topological information by using separate detecting devices for each sub-network of interest, and sending, on the basis of the islanding conditions detected by using the detecting devices, a disconnect signal to at least one power electrical unit in at least one sub-network of interest.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2013Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: ABB RESEARCH LTD.Inventors: Adrian Timbus, Alexandre Oudalov, Mats Larsson, Cherry Yuen

Patent number: 8543246Abstract: The present disclosure is concerned with controlling distributing of electrical power in a power distribution region. To effectively control the distribution of power in the distribution region, the substation of the region is provided with a distribution controller or Intelligent Substation Control System (ISCS). The distribution controller is connected to various process devices, which in turn are connected to primary devices of the region. The process devices send data corresponding to the primary devices to the distribution controller, and the distribution controller includes a processor which proposes a set of actions based on the received data. Further, the distribution controller includes a coordinating device which selects the final action from the set of proposed actions. The final action is implemented on the primary devices of the distribution region.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2008Date of Patent: September 24, 2013Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Cherry Yuen, Andrew Paice, Mats Larsson, Christian Frei

Patent number: 8509955Abstract: A method and system are provided for controlling a distribution of electrical power in a power distribution network having a first power distribution region and a second power distribution region. The first power distribution region can include first primary devices that interact with first process devices, and the second power distribution region can include second primary devices that interact with second process devices a distribution controller including a standardized description of the first region. A first distribution controller can be connected to the first process devices, can control a distribution of electrical power in the first power distribution region, and can identify, following a network reconfiguration, an orphan network section that is disconnected from the first region and connected to the second region.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2010Date of Patent: August 13, 2013Assignee: ABB Research LtdInventors: Mats Larsson, Christian Frei, Adrian Timbus, Cherry Yuen

Publication number: 20100204843Abstract: A distribution controller is disclosed for controlling a distribution of electrical power in an assigned power distribution region. The controller is adapted to be communicatively connected to process or secondary devices (IEDs, RTUs) which in turn interact with primary devices of the assigned region. The controller includes a processing module executing algorithmic, logical or functional modules or client applications. The latter implement application function algorithms that calculate, based on process data from process devices connected to the controller, values of a power distribution quantity such as voltage, current, power flow, load, or a phasor quantity of the assigned region. The controller further includes, for the purpose of data exchange with the process devices communicatively connected to the controller, data servers. The controller is adapted for writing the output or results of the functional module, i.e.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2008Publication date: August 12, 2010Applicant: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Mats Larsson, Cherry Yuen, Antti Hakala-Ranta

Publication number: 20070293156Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for managing congestion in an electrical transmission network. The electrical transmission network includes Power Flow Control Devices (PFDs) that adjust the transmission capability of the electrical transmission network. The method includes determination of a reference generation schedule followed by setting up of an objective function based on the reference generation schedule, a power flow in the electrical transmission network, bids for regulation, an actual generation schedule, and set points of PFDs. An optimisation problem is solved to minimize the objective function for a set of decision variables and the set of decision variables is applied in order to minimize congestion cost in the electrical transmission network.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2007Publication date: December 20, 2007Applicant: ABB Research LtdInventors: Cherry Yuen, Mats Larsson
