  • Publication number: 20030054716
Abstract: A method of making an electret that includes contacting a porous substrate that includes polymer with a composition that includes solvent capable of swelling the polymer, removing the solvent from the substrate, and contacting the substrate with water in a manner sufficient to impart an electret charge to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5559198
Abstract: A method for the production of poly(vinyl trifluoroacetate) and copolymers thereof with vinyl esters is described. Poly(vinyl trifluoroacetate) (PVTFA) is obtained in relatively high yield under mild conditions by using carbon dioxide under supercritical conditions as a solvent. Synthesis of syndiotactic PVTFA on a commercial scale without the use of environmentally-harmful solvents is made possible by the invention, which provides a convenient route to syndiotactic polyvinyl alcohol.

  • Patent number: 5087672
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel fluorinated acrylate and methacrylate ester monomers and homopolymers and copolymers thereof. In another aspect, it relates to a process for preparing monomers of the invention. Homopolymers and copolymers of the invention have units which correspond to the following general chemical formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, halo, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl or haloalkyl group, or a C.sub.6 to C.sub.10 aryl group,W is --O-- or --NR.sup.1 --, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl group,X is a carbon-to-carbon single bond or a spacer group,Y is a mesogenic group, andZ is a fluorinated alkyl group. The novel monomers and polymers can be liquid crystals.
