  • Patent number: 5084306
Abstract: A process for coating carpets with fluorochemical emulsions is disclosed. The process comprises treating the fabric with a fluorochemical emulsion then heating, rinsing and, finally, drying the treated fabric. The process is characterized in that the emulsion has a pH and divalent metal ion concentration sufficient to effect transfer of the fluorochemical from the emulsion to the carpet during the heating step.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 23, 1990
Date of Patent: January 28, 1992
    Assignee: Monsanto Company
Inventors: George R. McLellan, Chester C. Wu
  • Patent number: 4975325
Abstract: A melt-spinning process for producing self-crimping, nylon 66 carpet yarn at spinning speeds of, for example 4000 meters per minute is provided. The process utilizes polymer having a relative viscosity (RV) of at least 50 and containing a sufficient amount of a chain branching agent to prevent broken filaments and to provide yarn having good luster.

  • Patent number: 4721650
Abstract: A polyamide (preferably nylon 66) partially oriented feed yarn contains a small amount of branching agent and has an elongation between 45 and 150%. The feed yarn can be textured by the friction twist process to yield a textured yarn having crimp development similar to yarn textured by the much more expensive pin twist method.

  • Patent number: 4701518
Abstract: Antimicrobial activity is imparted to nylon during its preparation by adding to the nylon-forming monomer(s), a zinc compound (e.g. zinc ammonium carbonate) and a phosphorus compound (e.g. benzene phosphinic acid). The compounds are added in amounts sufficient to form in situ a reaction product containing at least 300 ppm of zinc, based on the weight of nylon prepared. Fibers made from the resulting nylon contain the reaction product uniformly dispersed therein and have antimicrobial activity of a permanent nature.

  • Patent number: 4138364
Abstract: A catalyst suitable for use in the preparation of fiber-forming polyesters and the method of making the same, wherein a tetraalkyl ammonium hydroxide is reacted with germanium dioxide, the reaction product being useful as a catalyst in the formation of fiber-forming polyesters.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4127565
Abstract: A flame-retardant, easily dyeable polyester and the process for preparing the same by polycondensing a glycol phthalate prepolymer with a phosphine oxide and dye improver selected from the group consisting ofR--O(G--O).sub.x --Hwhere R is an alkyl group containing an average of from about 8 to about 20 carbon atoms; G is a hydrocarbon radical selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, butylene and isomers thereof, and mixtures of the above, and x has a value of about 8-20, and ##STR1## where R is O, (CH.sub.3).sub.2 or H.sub.2 and the sum of x and y is 4-30. The polymer will be made up of 82 to 98 weight percent of the prepolymer, 8 to 1 weight percent of the dyeability improver and 10-1 weight percent of the phosphine oxide and is preferably formed in the presence of a catalyst which is the reaction product of germanium dioxide and a tetraalkyl ammonium hydroxide.
