  • Publication number: 20070093703
Abstract: A catheter has an elongated catheter shaft adapted for introduction into a body passageway of a patient. At least one optical fiber extends through the catheter shaft. The optical fiber has a distal end positioned at or near a distal end of the catheter for illuminating tissue and receiving light energy from tissue at the location of the distal end of the tip. A distal region of the catheter includes a deformed portion having a crest offset from a longitudinal axis of the catheter shaft. A distal tip of the optical fiber is positioned at the crest to increases the likelihood of the distal tip contacting tissue of a wall of the body passageway.

  • Publication number: 20060234959
Abstract: A method of photodynamic disruption of target cells within a target cell site wherein the target cells are associated with one or more of a sterilization procedure, a biofilm eradication procedure, a sterilization procedure of a medical prosthesis, a treatment of an infection at a tissue site, eradication of cancer cells and a fluid or food decontamination process. Surface acting agents such as benzalkonium chloride or polymyxin B sulfate or both may be utilized. A controllable light source capable of delivering light at a plurality of duty cycles is utilized to cause photoactivation of the photosensitive material resulting in degradation of target cells within the site.

  • Publication number: 20060173514
Abstract: The invention relates to a light emitting treatment device including one or more light members, which are configured to emit light energy for the purpose of performing localized photodynamic therapy at a targeted field. The light members may be disposed in a substantially uniform array and be configured to emit energy in a substantially uniform pattern. The light treatment device has a self-contained energy supply. The light emitting treatment device may be controlled to deliver one or more various light doses and dose rates at various light frequencies per treatment. The treatment device may be made of a polymeric material configured to conform to a body surface. The treatment device may contain the photosensitizer. The light emitting treatment device may further include a heat dissipating layer such as a layer of gold or gold alloy, or a layer of adhesive disposed on at least one of the one or more surfaces. Methods of using the treatment device are also disclosed.
