  • Patent number: 8579906
Abstract: An apparatus and measuring instrument includes a first part and a second part slidably moveable with respect to one another. The first part includes a locking member that has a hard portion which is movable from a first position to a second position. The second part includes a compressible portion that has a Shore hardness less than the hard portion and is positioned such that when the locking member is in the first position the compressible portion is not engaged by the hard portion, and when the locking member is in the second position the compressible portion is at least partially compressed by the hard portion thereby preventing relative movement of the first and second parts.

  • Patent number: 8486079
Abstract: A method and apparatus for remote alignment of a cut guide. The cut guide may be positioned on a base which is remote from a surgical site and positioned on a docking station. An alignment jig is removably positioned on a bone and is used to provide alignment information to the docking station. The docking station remotely aligns the cut guide relative to the base. Thereafter, the cut guide and base are removed from the docking station and positioned on the bone in place of the alignment jig. A surgical procedure using the cut guide may then be completed.

  • Publication number: 20110130760
Abstract: An instrument for forming a cavity within a bone. The instrument comprises a shaft, a blade pivotally mounted on the shaft towards a first end of the shaft and a push rod extending within the shaft and coupled to the blade, the push rod being arranged to slide within the shaft to cause the blade to rotate about its pivot. The instrument further comprises a depth stop coupled to the shaft arranged such that when the shaft is inserted into a bore extending into a bone the depth stop is arranged to engage bone surrounding the bore to limit movement of the shaft into the bore. A spring couples the push rod to the shaft and is arranged to resist axial movement of the push rod within the shaft towards the first end of the shaft. When the depth stop engages bone surrounding a bore, axial force exceeding the spring resistance applied to the push rod causes the push rod to slide within the shaft.

  • Patent number: 7744600
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for guiding a cutter to cut a bone to receive a knee prosthesis and methods for its use. In one aspect of the invention a relative angle adjustment mechanism is provided to adjust the relative angle between first and second cut guides. In another aspect of the invention, a cut guide is hinged to a mounting base such that it is rotatable about the hinge between a first position in which the cut guide is adjacent to the bone and a second position in which the cut guide is spaced from the bone. In another aspect of the invention, a mounting base includes an initial fixation mechanism and a secondary fixation mechanism.

  • Patent number: 7520880
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for supporting a surgical component adjacent to a bone during a surgical procedure. The apparatus includes an integral body having a hinge platform, a hinge integral with the hinge platform; and a surgical component mounting portion integral with the hinge for rotation generally about a hinge axis relative to the hinge platform. An adjustment mechanism is operably connected between the hinge platform and the surgical component mounting portion to allow selective incremental rotation of the surgical component mounting portion relative to the hinge platform.

  • Patent number: 6988009
Abstract: A system for registering an orthopedic implant in a computer assisted navigation system. The system includes a plurality of differently sized implants which may be the femoral component or hip stem of a prosthetic hip joint. A registration device is engageable with each of the implants in a predefined relative position. The registration device also includes at least one reference element registerable in the computer assisted navigation system. A second reference structure also having at least one reference element registerable in the computer assisted navigation system is detachably secured to the implant. The relative positions of the reference elements located on the registration device and second reference structure differs for each of the plurality of implants and thereby allows the navigation system to determine the nominal size of the implant. The relative position and orientation of the implant relative to the second structure can also be calibrated using the registration device.

  • Publication number: 20050215888
Abstract: A universal tracking apparatus for a surgical instrument, the tracking apparatus including a support arm and tracking array. The support arm allows position adjustment of the tracking array between a number of predefined orientations relative to the instrument which are recognizeable and registerable in the navigation system. The support arm may be coupled with multiple types of surgical instruments and used to accurately define the position of the instrument in an anatomical model generated by the navigation system. The adjustable coupling between the tracking array and the support arm allows the surgeon to determine which orientation is best suited for the surgical application and also allows the surgeon to adjust the position of the tracking array during a surgical procedure without the need to re-register the tracking apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20040171930
Abstract: A surgical instrument for use in a computer assisted navigation system is provided. The instrument includes at least one reference element registerable in the navigational system disposed on a mounting assembly. The mounting assembly is rotatably mounted on the instrument and includes a counterweight or other anti-rotation feature whereby the reference element may be maintained in a desired orientation. A rotatable shaft may extend through the mounting assembly and have one end which is securable to a rotary driver such as a drill and a second end securable to a rotary tool such as a reamer. The second end of the shaft may utilize a collet assembly to firmly grasp the driven tool and thereby limit relative movement of the tool and the reference elements disposed on the mounting assembly.
