  • Patent number: 6286271
Abstract: A load-bearing structural member is disposed between a selected base and a load bearing element and is capable of bearing loads of various magnitudes while granting flexibility and resiliency to a structure. The structural member includes a housing fixed to the base and having a resilient wall which defines an inner cavity and a first open end, a flexible partition joined to an inner surface of the wall adjacent to the first open end, a displaceable stiff closure member fitting within the first open end to define an inner fluid containing chamber between the cavity and the flexible partition, and a shaft interconnected between the closure member and the load bearing element. The load-bearing structural members may be interconnected and configured such to act as a support structure.

  • Publication number: 20010016708
Abstract: A fluid displacement pump includes a rigid hollow body having a first open end, a flexible partition disposed within the hollow body adjacent the first open end to create a variable volume fluid chamber between the partition and the hollow body, and an actuator acting upon the flexible partition. A movable piston including a shaft connected to the actuator and a head connected to the partition may be disposed within the hollow body. The fluid displacement pump can be incorporated into a number of designs to perform different functions, including a nursing pump, cutting mechanism, and rotational movement generator.

  • Patent number: 6257429
Abstract: A drink dispenser is provided and includes a rigid tubular casing having first and second ends and a flexible bag having an open end attachable to the second end of the casing, the casing and flexible bag cooperatively forming a fluid container. A locking ring engages the second end of the casing for removably securing the flexible bag to the second end of the casing. The rigid casing and flexible bag each define approximately one-half of the fluid capacity of the fluid container. The flexible bag is adapted to extend away from the casing when filled with fluid, and fully collapse into the casing as the fluid is withdrawn from the drink dispenser. A mouthpiece is attachable to the first end of the casing to provide an exit passageway for the fluid within the fluid container. Preferably, the mouthpiece includes a nipple having a one-way valve for preventing air from entering the fluid container. A base is removably snap-fit to the casing so as to encompass the flexible bag.

  • Patent number: 6253936
Abstract: A drink dispenser includes a dispenser body having an opening which permits passage of a fluid to be consumed therethrough, a rigid guide tube extending from the body opening, and a flexible fluid container which is supported relative to the guide tube. The flexible fluid container is adapted to extend away from the guide tube relative to the body opening when filled with the fluid to be consumed, and fully collapse into the guide tube as the fluid is withdrawn therefrom. A mouthpiece is provided which is in fluid flow communication with fluid contained within the flexible fluid container, and a valve prevents air-flow from the mouthpiece into the flexible fluid container.

  • Patent number: 6231009
Abstract: A variable volume fluid storage tank or reservoir and related fluid transfer system are provided for storing and transferring volatile or hazardous fluids, particularly such as fuel in an aircraft fuel supply system. Each fluid storage tank comprises a tank body in combination with a movable base wall defining a variable volume internal chamber for receiving and storing fluid. Each storage tank further includes a dispense port for dispensing the fluid, e.g., to a manifold or the like for supply to one or more aircraft engines, with the base wall moving relative to the tank body during fluid dispensing to substantially preclude any residual air or vapor space within the storage tank. A fluid level sensor unit mounted outside the tank chamber tracks displacement of the base wall to provide an indication of the fluid volume remaining within the storage tank.

  • Patent number: 6053888
Abstract: A variable volume bottle and related system are provided for infusing a selected medical fluid to a patient. The variable volume bottle comprises a relatively rigid bottle body having a lower neck adapted for connection to an infusion line by a cap fitting having a slotted nipple for controlled flow of the medical fluid from the bottle and through the infusion line to the patient. The bottle body further includes a movable upper wall which descends as the fluid is delivered to the patient, and a flow sensor unit tracks displacement of the movable upper wall to provide an indication of the dispensed fluid volume. A flow rate controller may be provided for constricting the slotted nipple to variably adjust the open area defined by the slot therein, and thereby variably select the rate of fluid flow to the patient.
