    Abstract: A pulse laser system utilized for communication transmits a modulated pulsed laser beam having a precise wavelength to match a receiver. An etalon is positioned in the resonant cavity of the laser and is adjustable to tune the laser. A continuous wave reference beam is provided and is compared with the laser output beam and if the wavelength's bear other than a predetermined relationship with respect to one another, a control signal is generated to adjust the etalon in the laser resonant cavity. In one embodiment another etalon is placed in the reference beam path as well as the laser beam path with the transmitted beams being detected in order to derive normalized proportionality factors relating to each beam so that a comparison of the proportionality factors may be made and utilized for control purposes.

The filter-detector contains vaporized selected atomic species or a molecular composition dissociable to the selected atomic species. The selected atomic species electronic ground state is not absorptive of the laser output wavelength, but the selected atomic species exhibits a metastable or long-lived energy state which when populated absorbs the laser output wavelength. A subsequent transition produces fluorescence from the atomic species as a function of the laser output.

    Abstract: The invention provides a metal vapor Raman cell structure for laser wavelength conversion and a method for mounting a sapphire window onto a metal tube having a known outside diameter in the manufacture of the aforesaid Raman cell. According to the method of this invention, a sapphire window and a metal tube having a dissimilar coefficient of thermal expansion are mounted and sealed together. The method of sealing the sapphire window onto the metal tube comprises the steps of: (1) cutting a narrow circular groove in one face of the sapphire window; (2) mounting the metal tube into the seat defined by the groove cut into the sapphire window; and (3) disposing a sealing material between the outer face of the seat defined by the groove and the metal tube disposed therein. According to this technique, the sealing material disposed in the groove is placed under compression during the operation of the vapor Raman cell so constructed.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method of maintaining the power of the output of a xenon chloride laser. The gases in the lasing chamber are circulated between the lasing chamber and a reforming chamber. In the reforming chamber, the gases are contacted with at least one metal chloride which is chemically less stable than hydrogen chloride. The temperature of the metal chloride in the reforming chamber is maintained between the condensation temperature of hydrogen chloride and the dissociation temperature of the metal chloride used. Also disclosed is apparatus for performing this method.
