Patent number: 5698371Abstract: A photocurable composition useful in preparing water-developable, solid printing plates is prepared by blending a urethane (meth)acrylate prepolymer with a complexing polymer based on poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) composition. The resulting composition is suitably formulated with additional photoactive (meth)acrylate monomers or oligomers and photoinitiator for casting or extrusion on a substrate to form a flexographic printing plate. Following UV exposure of the plate through a negative, unexposed areas can be removed by washing with aqueous media, to give a plate with a desirable relief image. The use of the aqueous washout solution as opposed to organic solvents minimizes pollution problems. The use of the complexing polymer significantly reduces the cold flow of the uncured plate and both increases toughness and reduces tack of the cured plate.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1994Date of Patent: December 16, 1997Assignee: PT Sub, Inc.Inventors: Srinivas K. Mirle, Truc-Chi T. Huynh-Tran

Patent number: 5554712Abstract: A photopolymer useful in preparing water-developable, solid printing plates is prepared by preparing a urethane prepolymer by reacting polyoxyalkylene diols or polyester diols, or a mixture thereof, with an excess of diisocyanate, followed by chain extending the resulting prepolymer mixture with an alkyldialkanolamine, then reacting the chain-extended product with a hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylate. The resulting photopolymer is suitably formulated with additional photoactive (meth)acrylate monomers or oligomers and photoinitiator for casting or extrusion on a substrate to form a flexographic printing plate. Following UV exposure of the plate through a negative, unexposed areas can be removed by washing with a slightly acidic aqueous medium, to give a plate with a desirable relief image. The use of the aqueous washout solution as opposed to organic solvents minimizes pollution problems.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1994Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Assignee: W.R. Patent number: 5290663Abstract: A photopolymer useful in preparing water-developable, solid printing plates is prepared by (A) preparing a urethane prepolymer by reacting a polyoxyalkylene diol (optionally carboxylic acid grafted) with an excess of diisocyanate, followed by chain extending the resulting prepolymer mixture with a dialkylolpropionic acid and preferably with additional diols(s) such as alkane diol(s) and (meth)acrylate-containing diol(s). Use of a new (meth)acrylate-containing diol in such chain extension completes the formation of photopolymer. However, in a third operation (B) hydroxyalkylmethacrylate may be reacted with the result of (A) whether or not (meth)acrylate-containing diol is used in (A). The carboxylic acid groups of the photopolymer may also be partially neutralized with a base. The photopolymer is suitably formulated with additional photoactive (meth)acrylate monomers or oligomers and photoinitiator for casting on a substrate or extruding to form a flexographic printing plate.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1991Date of Patent: March 1, 1994Assignee: W. Patent number: 5284918Abstract: A reactive plastisol composition includes a one component, solventless, storage stable, low temperature curable polyurethane composition and a thermoplast plastisol. The urethane composition is formed from a blocked isocyanate prepolymer and a curing agent. The isocyanate prepolymer is the reaction product of a polyol, a diisocyanate, and a ketoxime blocking agent. The diisocyanate has the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 -R.sub.4 are each a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl which can be linear or branched, R.sub.5 is a phenylene or naphthalene ring which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 linear or branched chained alkyl groups or halo groups, and m and n are each integers from 0 to 6. A polyurethane curing catalyst can also be used.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1991Date of Patent: February 8, 1994Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.Inventors: Truc-Chi T. Huynh-Tran, Felek Jachimowicz, Alexander C. Paton
