  • Publication number: 20220344713
Abstract: A biodegradable solid aqueous electrolyte composition, an electrochemical device incorporating the electrolyte composition, and methods for the same are provided. The electrolyte composition may include a hydrogel of a copolymer and a salt dispersed in the hydrogel. The copolymer may include at least two polycaprolactone chains attached to a polymeric center block. The electrochemical device may include an anode, a cathode, and the electrolyte composition disposed between the anode and the cathode. The electrolyte composition may include a crosslinked, biodegradable polymeric material that is radiatively curable prior to being crosslinked.

  • Publication number: 20220173433
Abstract: A biodegradable solid aqueous electrolyte composition, an electrochemical device incorporating the electrolyte composition, and methods for the same are provided. The electrolyte composition may include a rubber-like hydrogel including a copolymer and a salt. The copolymer may include at least two polycaprolactone chains coupled with a polymeric center block. The polymeric center block may include polyvinyl alcohol. The hydrogel may be biodegradable. The electrochemical device may include an anode, a cathode, and the electrolyte composition disposed between the anode and the cathode.

  • Patent number: 10214596
Abstract: A process for producing chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) involves contacting a chitinous material with a sufficient amount of an inorganic persulfate to produce chitin nanocrystals from the chitinous material. The process permits one-spot production of ChNCs from biomasses such as crustaceans, fungi, mushrooms, insects or mixtures thereof. Chitin nanocrystals produced by the process comprise surface carboxylic groups and are not initially deacetylated.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 2014
Date of Patent: February 26, 2019
Inventors: John H. Luong, Edmond Lam, Chi Woon Leung, Sabahudin Hrapovic, Keith B. Male

  • Patent number: 8900706
Abstract: A process for producing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) involves providing a cellulosic material, contacting the cellulosic material with an inorganic persulfate at an elevated temperature to produce CNCs, and recovering the CNCs. The process permits one-step production of CNCs from vegetative biomasses such as flax and hemp. Cellulose nanocrystals produced by the process with carboxylic groups are more uniform and have higher aspect ratios than CNCs produced by prior art processes.
