  • Patent number: 6406404
Abstract: A facial muscle exercising device is designed for insertion between the lips of a person's mouth. The facial muscle exercising device is comprised of a pair of lip-engaging members disposed in longitudinal separation from each other. Each of these lip-engaging members has a convex outwardly curved side with a concave groove defined therein. A pair of the elongated, coaxially aligned telescopically engaged spreader members are urged apart by an axially compressible coil spring having opposing ends and disposed in coaxial alignment with the telescoping spreader members. A guide rod is provided and is anchored to one of the lip-engaging members. The free end of the guide rod extends through a guide passage in the other lip-engaging member. • Patent number: 6406405
Abstract: A facial muscle exercising device has flared and weighted lip-engaging members biased apart by a compressed coil spring. The lip-engaging members include exposed ends that extend longitudinally outwardly away from the user's face and which have a sufficient weight that the user's cheek muscles are required to overcome the gravitational force acting on the outwardly projecting ends of the device. The facial muscle exercising device also has inner ends that project into the mouth cavity, and which are flared transversely outwardly to follow the contour of and contact the inner cheek surfaces of the user's mouth. Preferably, the exposed outwardly projecting ends have removable weights so that the gravitational force to be overcome can be varied to the extent desired by the user. The removable weights may be stainless steel desks that are held in seats formed in the distal extremities of the outwardly projecting ends of the facial muscle exercising device.

  • Patent number: 6396572
Abstract: The invention was originally developed to determine the strain-relief capability of a fusion splice protector as well as the compressive stress imparted to a fusion splice by the splice protector. The invention also permits performance and comparative analyses of splice protectors as well as any package in which the optical fiber is at least partially disposed. To those ends a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is axially arranged relative to the package such that a free or reference section of the FBG protrudes from the package while a shielded section lies within the package. Broadband light is supplied to the FBG which reflects certain wavelengths that are measured by an optical spectrum analyzer. The FBG reflected spectra will be split into two peaks as the reference and shielded sections experience different amounts or types of stress thereby providing a powerful analysis tool.

  • Publication number: 20020041722
Abstract: A new optical sensing device containing fiber Bragg gratings, a scanning bandpass filter, an interferometer and multiple photodetectors is disclosed. The present invention also describes a new system and method for fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogation and multiplexing. The new system combines a scanning Fabry-Perot (SFP) bandpass filter used to wavelength-multiplex multiple gratings in a single fiber, and an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder fibre interferometer made with a 3×3 coupler to detect strain-induced wavelength shifts. A passive technique for interferometer drift compensation using non-sensing FBGs is included in the system. A complete prototype system interrogates four gratings in a single fiber at a Nyquist sampling rate up to 10 kHz, with a noise floor measured near 4 n&egr; Hz−½ above 0.1 Hz. The inclusion of the interferometer drift compensation technique is shown to make quasi-static measurements feasible.

  • Patent number: 6319823
Abstract: A method is used to form a borderless via in a semiconductor device. A conductive layer, a borophosphosilicate glass (BPSG) layer and a patterned first mask layer are formed on a dielectric layer in sequence. The BPSG layer is patterned into a BPSG plug while using the patterned first mask layer as a mask. A second mask layer is formed to cover the patterned first mask layer and the metal layer. The conductive layer is defined to form a conductive line beneath the BPSG plug and the second mask layer. The first and second photoresist mask layers are removed. An inter-metal dielectric layer is formed around the BPSG plug and the conductive line. A via is formed in the inter-metal dielectric layer by removing the BPSG plug. A barrier layer and a metal layer fill the via to form a metal plug.

  • Patent number: 6287950
Abstract: A bonding pad structure and its method of manufacture. The structure has a metallic bonding pad with a patterned surface, a first passivation layer having an opening above the metallic bonding pad and a second passivation layer over the first passivation layer also having an opening above the metallic bonding pad. The method of forming the bonding pad structure includes forming a metallic bonding pad over a substrate, and then forming a first passivation layer over the substrate and the bonding pad. The first passivation layer above the bonding pad is patterned. Using the first passivation layer as a mask, a portion of the exposed metal pad material is removed. A patterned second passivation layer is formed over the first passivation layer. The second passivation layer has an opening that exposes the bonding pad. Finally, residual material from the first passivation layer inside the bonding pad region is removed to expose the bonding pad surface.
