  • Patent number: 7350600
Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a bit body that includes head sections, each having depending bit legs with a circumferentially extending outer surface, a leading side, and a trailing side. A bearing shaft depends inwardly from each of the bit legs for mounting a cutter. The bit includes a beveled surface formed at a junction of the leading side and the outer surface of each bit leg. The beveled surface is angled relative to a radial plane emenating from the axis of the bit. The angle of the beveled surface is at least 20 degrees, and extends to an inner surface of the bit leg. The bit can also have a layer of hardfacing on the leading, trailing and shirttail surfaces of the bit leg. A diversion finger of hardfacing extends circumferentially to direct cuttings.

  • Publication number: 20080011518
Abstract: An elastomeric seal ring is located between each bearing pin and each cone of an earth-boring bit. An excluder ring or band is imbedded within the inner diameter of the seal ring. A portion of the inner diameter of the seal ring as well as the excluder ring are in dynamic sealing contact with the bearing pin. The excluder ring may be harder and more wear resistant than the seal ring. The excluder ring may have lubricating properties. An outer excluder ring may be located on the outer diameter of the seal ring for engaging the cone to resist rotation.

  • Patent number: 7311159
Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a mechanical face seal assembly with PCD faces. The bit has a bearing shaft with a cone rotatably mounted on the bearing shaft. The seal locates between the bearing shaft and the cone for sealing lubricant therein. The seal includes at least one rigid seal ring having a cemented carbide body and an annular PCD face located on it. The mating face may also be of a PCD material. The cemented carbide body contains a binder that migrates into the PCD face while the PCD face is being formed. A binder-free region is leached on the surface of the PCD face.

  • Patent number: 7306061
Abstract: A rolling cone earth boring bit has a diverter and an arcuate segment located between the bit leg and the back face of the cone to divert debris from the seal gland area. The diverter has an oblong or oval base that inserts into a mating hole in a last machined surface of the bit. The diverter has a head that is wedge-shaped and protrudes from the hole into a clearance between the back face and the last machined surface. The head has an inner side that is spaced from an annular wall of the back face by a small uniform clearance. The head has an outer side that is oblique to the annular wall of the back face region to divert debris from the clearance. The segment is spaced from the diverter and is concentric to an axis of the bearing pin.

  • Patent number: 7128171
Abstract: An earth boring bit has rotating cones with two lubricant passages to increase bearing capacity and cause lubricant circulation. A lubricant reservoir in the body supplies lubricant to passages between the cone and bearing pin. A pressure compensator equalizes lubricant pressure to the exterior of the bit. A first passage leads from the reservoir to the upper side of the bearing pin. A second passage leads from the reservoir to the bearing pin at a point from 185 degrees to 225 degrees as seen from an inner end of the bearing pin. This point is located in a diverging region 51d of an annular clearance surrounding the bearing pin.

  • Patent number: 5281387
Abstract: A plastic container, particularly suited for returnable and refillable PET carbonated beverage bottles, having an enhanced level of crystallinity in the sidewall but maintaining a very low level of crystallinity in the base. The container can withstand higher caustic wash temperatures and exhibits reduced flavor carryover from one product to another. The container is formed from a preform, wherein a sidewall-forming section of the preform is initially expanded and then heated to contract and crystallize the same before being reexpanded, and a base-forming portion of the preform is shielded from the heat treatment and expanded either before or after the heat treatment.
