  • Publication number: 20080002291
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic recording having a write pole with a very narrow track width and well controlled critical dimensions. The write pole is formed by depositing an electrically conductive seed layer over a substrate, and then depositing a photo resist layer over the seed layer. The photo resist layer is photolithographically exposed and developed to form an opening or trench in the photoreist layer, the opening defining the pattern of the write pole. A magnetic material is then plated into the opening in the photoresist layer. The photo resist layer can then be removed by a chemical lift off, and portions of the seed layer that are not covered by the write pole can be removed by ion milling.

  • Publication number: 20070247749
Abstract: A method and structure for reducing corrosion during the manufacture of perpendicular write heads is disclosed. Auxiliary pole structures (otherwise known as trailing shields and wrap around shields) are susceptible to corrosion due to their iron containing composition and small dimensions. The impact of corrosion can be reduced by utilizing a gap material comprising an upper surface of noble metals, which extends from underneath the auxiliary pole and is exposed to the same corrosive environment during processing. The area of the exposed gap material is limited to optimize corrosion protection.

  • Publication number: 20070115583
Abstract: A magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic recording, the write head having a magnetic write pole configured with a cross section as viewed from the ABS that has a trailing portion with substantially vertical side walls and a leading portion formed with a taper that becomes narrower as it extends toward the leading edge. The write pole provides for excellent write field strength by providing sufficient cross section near the trailing edge to avoid magnetic saturation of the pole tip. The parallel side walls of the trailing portion also provide for excellent track width control during manufacture of the write head. The tapered portion of the write head, which starts some distance away from the trailing edge, prevents skew related adjacent track writing when the actuator that holds the write head is at its innermost or outermost travel extensions.

  • Publication number: 20060221498
Abstract: A magnetic read/write head is produced with an insert layer between the substrate and the magnetic transducer. The insert layer has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the substrate, which reduces the temperature pole tip recession (T-PTR) of the head because the insert layer is an intervening layer between the substrate and magnetic transducer. The insert layer is produced by plating, e.g., an Invar layer over the substrate prior to fabricating the magnetic transducer. The Invar layer is annealed and the structure planarized prior to depositing a non-magnetic gap layer followed by the fabrication of the magnetic transducer.

  • Publication number: 20060222871
Abstract: The present invention provides an electrodeposition/plating method for metal films and alloys in a bath which contain ferric ions and which usually deposit with high stress, but which when electrodeposited under pulse plating conditions in the presence of low valence vanadium or other ions capable of existing in multiple valence states produce low stress films and alloys and furthermore when plated through a mask creep laterally through walls and creep laterally along the surface of the mask to permit formation of overhangers, bridges, heat exchangers, and other complex three dimensional micro structures of low stress.

  • Publication number: 20060096081
Abstract: One preferred method for use in making a magnetic write head with use of the resist channel shrinking solution includes the steps of forming a first pole piece layer of a first pole piece; forming a gap layer over the first pole piece layer; forming a patterned resist over the first pole piece layer and the gap layer; electroplating a first pedestal portion of a second pole piece over the gap layer within a channel of the patterned resist; forming an oxide layer over the first pedestal portion; applying the resist channel shrinking solution comprising the resist channel shrinking film and the corrosion inhibitors over the patterned resist; baking the resist channel shrinking solution over the patterned resist to thereby reduce a width of the channel; removing the resist channel shrinking solution; electroplating a second pedestal portion of the second pole piece within the reduced-width channel of the patterned resist; removing the patterned resist; and milling the structure.

  • Publication number: 20060000080
Abstract: Methods suitable for use in making a write coil of a magnetic head includes the steps of forming a seed layer made of ruthenium (Ru) over a substrate; forming, over the seed layer, a patterned resist having a plurality of write coil trenches patterned therein; electroplating electrically conductive materials within the plurality of write coil trenches to thereby form a plurality of write coil layers; removing the patterned resist; and performing a reactive ion etch (RIE) in ozone gas (O3) for removing exposed seed layer materials in between the plurality of write coil layers. Advantageously, the write coil layers remain undamaged from the RIE in the ozone gas. Other structures may be fabricated in a similar manner.

  • Publication number: 20050266262
Abstract: An electroplated film is deposited over a substrate with a plating frame pattern that includes a plating field defined by a plurality of individual features. By dividing the plating field into a plurality of individual features, the delamination force at any location on the plating field is greatly reduced. Thus, a film with a large stress, such as a high moment film, may be plated to a greater thickness than is possible with conventionally plated films.
