    Abstract: A system and method for using Mobility Management (MM) and Session Management (SM) procedures in an SAE/LTE system. The present invention modifies several MM and SM procedures that have been defined for other 3GPP access systems (such as GERAN, UTRAN) so that they meet the requirements of LTE/SAE. While the present invention re-uses some existing procedures, it further defines new protocols for MM and SM procedures when accessing 3GPP systems by Evolved UTRAN (EUTRAN). With respect to the new protocols, the encoding rules are re-used from the existing MM and SM procedures and a very similar general message format is created. With respect to the signaling messages, the present invention re-uses the existing information element definitions for each parameter included in a message.

    Abstract: Solutions are described that enable a user equipment (UE) for a communication system always to derive required identifiers using an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) even when the UE has only a subscriber identity module. One solution is based on a table, or list, that is maintained in the UE. Another solution is based on always taking a predetermined number of digits of the IMSI. Yet another solution is based on try-and-fail signaling. In consequence, the UE does not always need to know how many digits of the IMSI are used to indicate a mobile network code, which in some situations is impossible to know anyway.

    Abstract: A technique is provided for use by a user terminal or mobile services switching centre (MSC) for responding to a request to switch an on-going call from speech mode to multimedia mode within a wireless communication network conFig.d to automatically disconnect a call if a requested mode switch is not confirmed within a predetermined period of time specified by a call drop timer. In one example, the terminal or MSC activities an automatic response timer upon receipt of a request from a user to switch an on-going call from speech to multimedia, with the timer set shorter than the call drop timer. The user receiving the request is then prompted to accept or decline the request. If no response is received before expiration of the automatic response timer, the terminal or MSC automatically declines the request on behalf of the user so that the call drop timer does not expire.

    Abstract: A communication interface and a method for establishing the communication interface for communications between a mobile station and a serving network node over a Gb interface in a GSM network are described herein. The communication interface comprises control logic, a network layer having a plurality of NSAPIs, and a link layer having a plurality of user-data SAPIs. The number of NSAPIs equals the number of user-data SAPIs. In one embodiment, the number of NSAPIs is limited to equal the number of user-data SAPIs. In another embodiment, the number of SPAIs is expanded to equal the number of NSAPIs. In both cases, the control logic performs one-to-one mapping between the NSAPIs and the user-data SAPIs.

    Abstract: A user equipment (UE) includes a resettable timer that clocks a period after a successful packet-switched handover in a communication system. If a command message for setting packet-data transmission parameters is not received from the network before the period elapses, the UE starts a transmission-parameter negotiation if the UE wishes to do so. In this way, a UE can negotiate optimal parameters for packet-data transmission.

    Abstract: The method and apparatus described herein enables a mobile station to subscribe to a larger number of multi-cast services than provided by a conventional wireless network. According to one embodiment, the network establishes a multi-cast communication session and allocates a NSAPI to the communication session during a data transfer phase. Subsequently, the network transmits the multi-cast data during the established communication session. According to another exemplary embodiment, the network includes two non-overlapping value spaces, where one of the value spaces is reserved for multi-cast NSAPIs. In this embodiment, the network receives a NSAPI selected by the mobile station during the joining phase from this value space. During the data transmission phase, the network establishes a multi-cast communication session based on the selected NSAPI, and transmits the corresponding multi-cast data during the communication session.
