Patent number: 7698389Abstract: A method for configuring devices on a computer network. Configuration involves initiating a configuration session on a primary device causing the primary device to collect configuration session on a primary device causing the primary device to collect configuration logic for the primary device and one or more secondary devices. The primary device then generates a user interface having user accessible controls for selecting and returning configuration settings for the primary and secondary devices. Each selected configuration setting is then returned and applied to the primary or secondary device for which it is selected.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Robert Sesek, Christian L. Patent number: 7221487Abstract: A scan window apparatus for defining and identifying a selected scan window within an overall scanable surface of a scanning device. The scanable surface is defined by intersecting first and second edges. The scan window apparatus includes moveable position markers which can be moved along the first and second edges of the scanable surface to thereby define the selected scan window. A scan window illumination device is used to illuminate the selected scan window. The illumination device can be a light source directed towards the scanable surface, or a directed, focused light source to trace at least a portion of a perimeter which defines the scan window. The invention also provides for an optical scanning device having a platen, a scan window identification device allowing a user to define a selected scan window on the platen, and a scan window illumination device to illuminate the selected scan window.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2001Date of Patent: May 22, 2007Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Robert Sesek, Christian L. Struble, J. Michael Dunlap

Patent number: 7142333Abstract: A method of document scanning comprises wirelessly communicating a request, initiated by a mobile computing device, to a scanner to image a paper document into an electronic document. After imaging the paper document with the scanner to produce an electronic document, the method includes sending the electronic document from the scanner to a document server identified by the mobile computing device. A document scanner comprises an imaging mechanism configured for creating an electronic document from a paper document and a wireless communication module configured for wirelessly receiving an imaging request from a mobile computing device and for sending the electronic document to a document server based on the imaging request.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2001Date of Patent: November 28, 2006Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventor: Christian L. Struble

Patent number: 6898317Abstract: An improved scanning device, such as a Multi-Function Peripheral (“MFP”), and corresponding host system allow a user to scan images for inclusion in a document having pre-defined fields or areas for accepting such scanned images. An electronic form template or parameters for the template are stored in the memory of the MFP or downloaded to the MFP by a host computer. When scanned images are to be inserted into the template, the MFP can access the template or its parameters from memory and ascertain the size and shape of the pre-defined field into which the scanned image must fit. The MFP can then automatically scan the image at an appropriate resolution, size and shape to fit the form template for which it is intended.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2001Date of Patent: May 24, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Christian L. Struble, Robert Sesek

Patent number: 6870648Abstract: An apparatus and system for scanning a bounded scan area within a scanable surface of a scanning device are provided. The present invention includes a plurality of members constructed and arranged to define a scan area on a scanable surface of the scanner, a link for communicating with the control interface of the scanner, and a switch for generating a signal to the control interface to initiate and complete a scan of the bounded scan area defined by the plurality of members. The scanning apparatus and system further provide a method for scanning a bounded scan area, which includes the steps of determining whether the scan area is contained entirely within the enclosed scanable surface, scanning the scanable portion of the scan area if the enclosed scan area is not contained entirely within the scanable surface, and scanning the entire scan area if the scan area is contained entirely within the scanable surface.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2001Date of Patent: March 22, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Robert Sesek, Christian L. Struble, J. Michael Dunlap

Patent number: 6745253Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and method for locating and using a peripheral device. The system is arranged such that a user can wirelessly transmit an initial communication with a computing device, await an audible signal from a peripheral device identifying its location, and wirelessly transmit data to the peripheral device with the computing device. By way of example, the computing device can comprise a portable computing device such as a personal digital assistant (PDA).Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2001Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP.Inventor: Christian L.
