Publication number: 20250216290Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for providing Köhler illumination for inspection, under a microscope, of end connectors of fiber optic cables. In one aspect, a microscopy system provides Köhler illumination where a numerical aperture of the illumination (NAIL) is greater than a numerical aperture of imaging (NAIM). In another aspect, a reflected light microscopy system includes an array of light sources which illuminate a diffuser, which, in turn, projects the diffused light to reflect off of a beamsplitter and through an objective/condenser upon the end connector. In yet another aspect, the array of light sources may provide different light patterns to illuminate the end connector, and each light pattern may correspond to a different type of radiused end connector.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 3, 2024Publication date: July 3, 2025Applicant: VIAVI SOLUTIONS INC.Inventors: Abhilash SUKUMARI, Kevin CASSADY, Christopher Russell WAGNER, Nicklos Joseph BULITKA, Eugene CHAN, Christian Richard COMTOIS-ARNALDO

Patent number: 12346066Abstract: The goal of computer generated holography (CGH) is to synthesize custom illumination patterns by shaping the wavefront of a coherent light beam. Existing algorithms for CGH rely on iterative optimization with a fundamental trade-off between hologram fidelity and computation speed, making them inadequate for high-speed holography applications such as optogenetic photostimulation, optical trapping, or virtual reality displays. We propose a new algorithm, DeepCGH, that relies on a convolutional neural network to eliminate iterative exploration and rapidly synthesize high resolution holograms with fixed computational complexity. DeepCGH is an unsupervised model which can be tailored for specific tasks with customizable training data sets and an explicit cost function. Results show that our method computes 3D holograms at record speeds and with better accuracy than existing techniques.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2021Date of Patent: July 1, 2025Assignee: THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILLInventors: Nicolas Christian Richard Pégard, Mohammad Hossein Eybposh, Nicholas William Caira, Mathew Abuya Atisa, Praneeth Kumar Chakravarthula

Publication number: 20250146902Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for inspection, under a microscope, of end connectors of fiber optic cables are provided. In one aspect, a light ring including a circular array of light sources provides darkfield illumination to an end connector being inspected under a microscope. Each of the light sources may be lit in series and the resulting shadows may be used to identify dirt on the end connector, as well as to determine whether any dirt identified on the end connector can be cleaned off. In another aspect, a light ring combined with a redirection ring (e.g., a reflector and/or refractor ring) may provide darkfield illumination. In yet another aspect, a series of images may be captured and analyzed to automatically identify dirt on the end connector, as well as to determine whether any identified dirt can be cleaned off.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2023Publication date: May 8, 2025Applicant: VIAVI SOLUTIONS INC.Inventors: Joshua Benjamin Julius PHILIPSON, Kevin CASSADY, Nicklos Joseph BULITKA, Christopher Russell WAGNER, Christian Richard COMTOIS-ARNALDO
