  • Publication number: 20140366736
Abstract: A device for treating a gas stream, especially an exhaust-gas stream of an internal combustion engine, includes at least one radial chamber radially conducting the gas stream and extending substantially radially from a central region to an outer collecting chamber. First and second, preferably parallel, substantially disk-shaped walls delimit the chamber. Electrodes project from the first wall into the chamber. The first wall is formed of electrically insulating material having the electrodes fastened therein and electrically interconnected by electrical conductors in or on the insulating material. Two or more chambers may be disposed, axially in series, around the central region. Very effective treatment of exhaust gas with an electric field for ionization or generating a plasma can be provided over a relatively short structural length in a flow direction. Electric fields running transversely to the flow direction provide new possibilities for selecting various parameters of the treatment device.

  • Patent number: 8906315
Abstract: A device for treating exhaust gas containing soot particles includes at least one ionization element for ionizing soot particles, at least one filter element having at least one section to which an electrical potential can be applied, and at least one flow-directing device. The flow-directing device can influence a flow of the exhaust gases in such a way that the soot particles can be prevented from being deposited on at least one electric insulation of the ionization element or of the filter element or can be removed therefrom. Soot particles are therefore effectively prevented from being deposited on electric insulation of exhaust gas cleaning components, thereby preventing short-circuits from being produced and permitting exhaust gas systems to be safely operated.

  • Publication number: 20140209201
Abstract: A mounting includes at least one electrode producing electric fields in an exhaust gas line, a disk of electrically insulating material having inflow and outflow sides and openings for exhaust gas, and at least one electrical conductor fastened to and/or in the disk. The electrical conductor is covered by the electrically insulating material at least on the inflow side and in electrical contact with the electrodes extending toward the outflow side. Since the electrical conductor is completely surrounded by insulating material during operation, an area that must be covered by a soot layer for a leakage current to develop is increased. The leakage length increases and one or more electrodes are in the exhaust gas at the same time. The soot particles deposited on the mounting and the exhaust gas line, need to be removed less often. An exhaust line device having at least one mounting is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20140112850
Abstract: A device for exhaust gas treatment in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, in particular in a motor vehicle, includes an electrically heatable honeycomb body through which an exhaust gas can flow. The honeycomb body is disposed in a casing tube and has at least one current-conducting structure with electric insulation for voltages greater than 24 V. A current-generating pulsed voltage is applied to the structure to heat the honeycomb body. It is thus possible for heating elements in the exhaust-gas flow to be powered by an on-board electrical system voltage of for example 48 V. A method for operating the honeycomb body is provided with which, even at operating voltages greater than 24 V, the generation of heat in the electrically heatable honeycomb body can be kept in a desired range by adjustment of a pulse width and/or repetition frequency of the pulsed voltage.

  • Patent number: 8641808
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing soot particles in exhaust gas, particularly of an internal combustion engine, includes first and second at least partially electrically conductive structures with an intermediate space therebetween, a high voltage source forming a potential between the first and second structures and at least one at least partially electrically conductive intermediate structure in the intermediate space receiving an intermediate potential. A method for treating the exhaust gas includes conducting exhaust gas from the first to the second structure and applying a high voltage at least temporarily between the first and second structures. At least part of the soot particles in the exhaust gas is ionized or agglomerated and deposited on the second structure. A high voltage between potentials of the first and second structures is applied at least temporarily to the intermediate structure. An electric field is influenced favorably and disruptions from undesirable voltage flashovers are reduced.

  • Patent number: 8407990
Abstract: An evaporation unit for evaporating an aqueous solution including at least one reducing agent precursor, includes at least one evaporator cavity defined by a wall made of a material containing titanium. A heat-imparting layer disposed outside the evaporator cavity is made of a material having a thermal conductivity of at least 100 W/mK (Watts per meter and Kelvin) and is connected to the evaporator cavity in a heat-conducting manner. A heating layer disposed outside the heat-imparting layer is connected in a materially integral manner to the heat-imparting layer. The evaporator unit can be controlled in a highly dynamic manner, thereby enabling a sufficiently high amount of ammonia to be produced even during rapid load changes and consequently significant increases in the concentration of nitric oxide in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. A device and a motor vehicle having the evaporation unit are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20120110986
Abstract: A device for evaporating a urea-water solution includes a delivery duct for the urea-water solution. The delivery duct extends through at least a first zone and a second zone for the introduction of heat energy. The zones can be heated separately from one another and, in the second zone, the delivery duct initially has a meandering course in a second inlet region, and thereafter has a rectilinear course. A method for evaporating a urea-water solution includes pre-heating the urea-water solution in the first zone to a temperature in a range from 100° C. to 150° C. and evaporating the urea-water solution in the second zone at a temperature in a range from 420° C. to 490° C. In particular, this significantly reduces the tendency for such an exhaust-gas-external evaporator for a urea-water solution to become blocked. A motor vehicle is also provided.
