Publication number: 20160108797Abstract: A thermostat for controlling the flow of a coolant into a radiator and a bypass circuit is provided. When the bypass circuit is to be closed, the thermostat displaces a shaft that is operably attached to a bypass plate. When in the closed position, the bypass plate is configured to engage a top wall of the bypass circuit so as to prevent the flow of coolant into the bypass circuit. To minimize the formation of a water pressure pulses generated by the closing of the bypass circuit, only a portion of the bypass plate initially contacts the top wall. Such limited contact allows for the restriction of the flow of coolant into the bypass circuit, and interrupts the even flow of coolant around the bypass plate. Such restriction and/or interruption allows for the gradual closing of the bypass circuit, which minimizes the associated water hammer effect.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 29, 2013Publication date: April 21, 2016Applicant: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventor: Christofer J. Publication number: 20150192058Abstract: Engine motor oil drawn from an oil sump by an oil pump is forced to flow through a primary flow path to moving engine parts at pressures spanning a first pressure range and a second pressure range which is greater than the first pressure range. When pressure is within the first pressure range, some engine motor oil flow may be diverted to a secondary flow path having piston cooling jets which spray engine motor oil toward undercrown surfaces of engine pistons. When pressure is within the second pressure range, some engine motor oil flow is diverted to the piston cooling jets and also to a tertiary flow path which may be a return to the oil sump.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2012Publication date: July 9, 2015Applicant: International Engine Intellectual Property Company LLCInventor: Christofer J. Patent number: 8616178Abstract: An engine braking system includes an exhaust control path between an engine cylinder and an exhaust discharge path. A relief valve has a valve element located within the path, the valve element operable between a closed position to close the exhaust control path, corresponding to an engine operating condition, and an open position to open the exhaust control path, corresponding to an engine-braking condition. A spring urges the valve element toward the closed position. A retainer is arranged to be positioned in two operating positions, a first operating position which prevents opening of the valve element and a second operating position which allows opening of the valve element. An actuator wedge is operable to move between a first position and a second position to move the retainer between the first and second operating positions.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2010Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventor: Christofer J. Patent number: 8485145Abstract: A breather system for a crankcase of an internal combustion engine includes a gas compressor configured to elevate the pressure of crankcase blow-by gas. At least one gas-oil separator receives gas with entrained oil from the compressor, separates oil from the gas and discharges cleaned gas. The oil is re-circulated back to the crankcase. The cleaned gas is either discharged through the engine exhaust system or re-circulated back into the engine combustion air intake. A bypass conduit allows cleaned gas to be re-circulated from the gas-oil separator outlet to the compressor inlet to balance the blow-by production with the capacity of the compressor.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2009Date of Patent: July 16, 2013Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLC.Inventor: Christofer J. Publication number: 20120189465Abstract: A piston assembly for a fuel pump comprises a first piston sub-assembly and a second piston sub-assembly. The first piston sub-assembly comprises a first piston portion, a first check ball connected to a first spring and a first O-ring. The first check ball forms a fluid tight seal against the first piston portion when the first spring is uncompressed. The first check ball allows fluid flow relative to the first piston portion when the first spring is compressed. The first O-ring has a front side and a back side. The first O-ring forms a fluid tight seal relative to the first piston portion. The second piston sub-assembly comprises a second piston portion, a second check ball connected to a second spring, and a second O-ring. The second check ball forms a fluid tight seal against the second piston portion when the second spring is uncompressed. The second check ball allows fluid flow relative to the second piston portion when the second spring is compressed. The second O-ring has a front side and a back side.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2011Publication date: July 26, 2012Applicant: International Engine Intellectual Property Company , LLCInventor: Christofer J. Patent number: 8171924Abstract: A method of selectively directing a flow of blow-by gas (F) in a vehicle having an engine (14) and a turbocharger compressor (32) includes the steps of providing fluid communication for the flow of blow-by gas from the engine to a valve (12), actuating the valve with a valve actuator (38) to at least one of a closed system position and an open system position, and selectively directing the flow of blow-by gas from the valve to at least one of the turbocharger compressor and an atmosphere (28).Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2009Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Frank J. Patent number: 8006661Abstract: An internal combustion engine has one or more engine cylinders (12) within which fuel is combusted and a pair of cylinder valves (14, 16) spring-biased (22, 24) closed but open in unison to place the respective cylinder in flow communication with one of an intake and an exhaust. A bridge (34) bridges ends of the pair external to the cylinder and has a spherically concave depression (42) in a face that is opposite a face that bears against the ends of the pair. The depression is located intermediate locations at which the ends of the pair bear against the bridge. A pivot foot (44) has a spherically convex surface (46) seated with substantial conformity in the depression and a flat surface (48) opposite the spherically convex surface. The flat surface of the pivot foot abuts a flat surface (50) of a rocker (30) that when rocked acts through the pivot foot and bridge to open the respective pair of valves.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2009Date of Patent: August 30, 2011Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventor: Christofer J.
