  • Publication number: 20050049595
Abstract: Translational bone fixation assemblies, kits containing such assemblies, and methods of use are described herein. The described assemblies may be used in spinal fusion procedures in which a damaged or diseased disc (or part of a disc) is removed from between a pair of vertebrae and a spinal fusion spacer is placed between the vertebrae. The assemblies may be applied to an anterior portion of the affected vertebrae to span the affected disc space, and may be fixed to the vertebrae using bone screws. The assemblies may function to maintain the vertebrae aligned during the initial period following fixation in which fusion of the spacer to the adjacent vertebrae occurs. The assemblies may also function to share some of the axial spinal load applied to the fusion spacer to prevent extreme subsidence of the spacer into the vertebral body, such as where the patient has poor bone quality.

  • Publication number: 20050015093
Abstract: A drill guide, drill guide system and method of use is disclosed. The drill guide assembly includes one or more alignment drill tubes that are remotely alignable with corresponding fastener holes of a bone plate to which the drill guide is releasably lockable. The drill guide is configured to allow a bone hole to be drilled slightly off-center with respect to the fastener holes of the plate so that fasteners inserted in those holes may be used to compress the underlying bone segments together when the fasteners are tightened in the bone and plate. In one embodiment, the drill guide is disclosed for use in compressing and fixing adjacent vertebra as part of a spinal fusion procedure.

  • Patent number: 6313739
Abstract: A sensor which is installed in a vehicle, for sensing an object or a person, is operated for adjustment purposes in a test mode. The installation position of the sensor or of the device in the vehicle is changed with an adjustment device as a function of the evaluation of the test data which are determined. Alternatively, or in addition, a message can be issued as a function of the result of the evaluation. The invention ensures that the device is installed at a precise location in the vehicle and the position of vehicle occupants is thus determined precisely.

  • Patent number: 5783836
Abstract: An optical sensor apparatus for detecting a vapor of an organic solvent is characterized by a simple structure which allows easy manufacture, high reliability, low cost, compactness in size, and portability. The optical sensor apparatus has a light source unit which emits light for irradiating a polymer thin film formed on a flat reflecting substrate of a sensing element. Light reflected by the sensing element is detected by a light detecting unit. The light source unit, the sensing element, and the light detecting unit are integrally supported by a housing. The polymer thin film which comes into contact with a vapor of an organic solvent causes a change in the thickness and a reflective index thereof. This change is utilized to detect the existence and/or concentration of a vapor of an organic solvent.

  • Patent number: 5644069
Abstract: A method for identifying a single fuel vapor in an atmosphere of interest that is selected from the group consisting of at least two fuels and that is the sole fuel component of the atmosphere, comprising the steps of: providing a plurality of measuring means that are at least equal in number to the types of fuels that compose the fuel group and which have different sensitivities to the respective fuel vapors; presetting the relationship between the magnitudes of the outputs from the respective measuring means at various fuel vapor concentrations in such a manner that it differs from one fuel vapor to another; placing said measuring means in the atmosphere of interest containing said single fuel vapor as the sole fuel component; measuring the concentration of that fuel vapor; determining the relationship between the magnitudes of outputs as obtained from the respective measuring means; and comparing the thus determined relationship with the preset relationships, thereby identifying the fuel vapor in the atmos

  • Patent number: 5640234
Abstract: Disclosed and claimed is an optical sensor for the detection of chemical species. The optical sensor includes an optical waveguide having a guiding thin film. The thickness of the refrative index of the guiding thin film changes due to adsorption or absorption of the chemical species or reaction of the chemical species with the guiding thin film. The thickness of the guiding thin film is above the cutoff thickness in the presence of gaseous or liquid chemical species to be detected. And, the thickness of the guiding thin film is below the cutoff thickness in the absence of such chemical species.

  • Patent number: 4419440
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the introduction of water-insoluble photographic additives, especially dye couplers, in aqueous media with the application of high-boiling organic solvents. The purpose of the invention is to develop an improved process for the introduction of hydrophobic photographic additives, especially dye couplers, in gelatin or other hydrophilic bonding agents in order to produce stable dispersions suitable for storage. This invention has the object of creating a new, high-boiling solvent for the dispersion of hydrophobic photographic additives. According to the invention, this aim is achieved by employing phosphonic acid diamides, methane bisphosphonic acid diamides, phosphonic acid esters, methane bisphosphonic acid esters or mixed phosphonic acid esters or methane bisphosphonic acid ester amides as high-boiling solvents.
