Patent number: 11048594Abstract: For adding cooperative file coloring protocols in a data deduplication system using a processor device in a computing environment, a preferred character is represented for file coloring in a file using a code selected from a multiplicity of codes that represent a variety of contexts. The original meaning of the preferred character is retained when representing the preferred character for the file coloring by the code selected from the multiplicity of codes. The file is deduplicated by the data deduplication system according to the file coloring that represents a source file of a backup application.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2017Date of Patent: June 29, 2021Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Christophe Fagiano, Itzhack Goldberg, Michael Hirsch, Frank Krick, Neil Sondhi

Patent number: 10684993Abstract: A method for selectively compressing unstructured data includes preparing, at a host system, a data blob made up of unstructured data, for storage on a storage system. The method encodes a first portion of the data blob with a first color and a second portion of the data blob with a second color. The first color indicates that the associated portion should remain uncompressed, while the second color indicates that the associated portion should be compressed. The method transmits the encoded data blob to a storage virtualization layer associated with the storage system. In response, the storage virtualization layer stores the first portion in an uncompressed format, and compresses the second portion and stores the second portion in a compressed format. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed herein.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2016Date of Patent: June 16, 2020Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Christophe Fagiano, Itzhack Goldberg, Neil Sondhi, Daniel J. Patent number: 10558363Abstract: A hybrid compressed media is maintained by detecting hot data within a logical unit name (LUN), and compressing a remaining cold data within the LUN while keeping the hot data uncompressed. The uncompressed hot data and the compressed cold data are both stored within the LUN.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2016Date of Patent: February 11, 2020Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Christophe Fagiano, Itzhack Goldberg, Sandor Lengyel, Neil Sondhi, Daniel J. Patent number: 9582383Abstract: For efficient handing of semi-asynchronous RAID write failures using a processor device in a computing environment, a write operation is committed on a primary copy of data on a primary entity while sending the data to a secondary entity while awaiting an acknowledgment by the secondary entity. The acknowledgment indicates to the primary entity that metadata for the write operation has arrived at the secondary entity without necessarily indicating the data has arrived at the secondary entity.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2016Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Christophe Fagiano, Itzhack Goldberg, Carl E. The acknowledgment indicates to the primary entity that metadata for the write operation has arrived at the secondary entity without necessarily indicating the data has arrived at the secondary entity. The acknowledgment is sent from the secondary entity regardless of a write failure and allowing the secondary entity to perform a recovery operation if a write failure occurs.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2014Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Christophe Fagiano, Itzhack Goldberg, Carl E. Patent number: 6421317Abstract: The invention aims to implement the Load Balancing/Backup function in a Multi-Users environment and to allow a remote station to have an alternate route through another Token Ring DLC to backup. By directing the connection to another route, it postpones the connection from a remote station to a Token Ring user through a first selected Token Ring DLC for a predetermined delay. For that purpose, each Token Ring DLC stores parameters of the remote station that has an unsuccessful connection in its own Connection Cache Table. In this way, when a Test frame is received in each DLC, this latter checks in the Connection Cache Table before responding to the Test frame. The Test frame is ignored and no Test response is sent back to the remote station when the remote station is identified in the table so as to allow the remote station to detect an alternate route with a backup DLC if it exists.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1998Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lionel Denecheau, Denis Esteve, Christophe Fagiano
