  • Patent number: 11446164
Abstract: A variable stiffness spring assembly includes first and second members made of a first material and separated by a gap along at least a portion of their lengths, and one or more layers made of a second material disposed in the gap. The variable stiffness spring assembly can be incorporated into or take the form of a limb support assembly, such as a prosthetic foot. The second material disposed between the first and second members is rate-sensitive or speed-dependent, such that the material exhibits different properties when the user of the prosthetic foot is walking at high or fast walking speeds compared to low or slow walking speeds. The prosthetic foot can exhibit high damping and energy absorption, and therefore stability, at slow speeds, and high energy return at faster speeds.

  • Publication number: 20220168117
Abstract: A prosthetic foot including a continuous body extending from a proximal end to a distal end. The body includes an anterior surface, a posterior surface opposite the anterior surface, and a fin on the posterior surface. A prosthetic foot can include a first footplate and a second footplate. The first footplate extends between a proximal portion and a distal portion. The proximal and distal portions of the first footplate are configured to operatively engage a support surface during ambulation. The second footplate extends between a proximal portion and a distal portion. The distal portion of the second footplate is coupled to the first footplate at an intermediate location between the proximal and distal portions of the first footplate. The second footplate incudes an anterior surface, a posterior surface opposite the anterior surface, and a fin on the posterior surface.

  • Publication number: 20220062009
Abstract: A prosthetic foot can have an ankle unit with semi-active adjustable stiffness. In one example, the adjustable stiffness is in the sagittal plane. The ankle stiffness can be varied by the ankle unit in response a user input, which can be received via a wireless communication device. The ankle unit can include two load application locations for one or more cantilever springs so as to provide different stiffness in plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. The positions of the two load application locations can be varied in order to vary the stiffness.

  • Patent number: 10980648
Abstract: A limb support device includes a variable stiffness mechanism. The limb support device can be an orthotic or prosthetic device. The variable stiffness mechanism can include, for example, a rate-sensitive or speed-dependent material or a damping mechanism. The variable stiffness mechanism causes the limb support device to exhibit different properties when the user of the limb support device is walking at high or fast walking speeds compared to low or slow walking speeds. The limb support device can exhibit high damping and energy absorption, and therefore stability, at slow speeds, and high energy return at faster speeds.

  • Patent number: 9668887
Abstract: The present foot prosthesis includes various structural features that provide the foot with advantageous rollover properties. In certain embodiments, the foot guides rollover toward the medial side. For example, an asymmetrical upper element and a correspondingly shaped resilient ankle member support more of the wearer's weight on the lateral side as the foot rolls over. In another embodiment, stiffeners added to the resilient ankle member increase the stiffness on the lateral side relative to the medial side. In certain other embodiments, the foot provides progressively increasing support from mid stance through toe off. For example, a gap between the resilient ankle member and the lower element closes during the later portion of the wearer's gait. The closing gap increases a contact area between the resilient ankle member and the lower element, providing progressively increasing support. In another embodiment, the foot includes a gap between a lower front edge of an attachment adapter and the upper element.
