    Abstract: A polyurethane material, the coatings prepared therefrom, and methods of making the same are provided. A polyurethane material may be formed from components comprising at least one polyisocyanate, at least one active hydrogen-containing material, at least one material having at least one primary or secondary amino group and at least one hydroxyl group, and at least one acid functional material or anhydride having a functional group reactive with isocyanate or hydroxyl groups of other components from which the polyurethane material is formed. The former include carbamate functional polyester, acrylic polymer, and polyurethane, where each contains a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of the Structure I depicted above. Also the urethane oligomers has a plurality of carbamate groups of Structure I that are pendant and/or terminal.

    Abstract: A liquid coating composition, comprising (a) from about 5 to 100 percent of resin solids of a mixture of (i) a substantially saturated polyhydroxylated polydiene polymer, having terminal hydroxyl groups, and (ii) a chlorinated polyolefin, wherein the weight of the polydiene polymer is between about 5 and 95 percent of the total weight of the mixture of polyhydroxylated polydiene polymer and chlorinated polyolefin; (b) about 0 to about 95 percent by weight of resin solids of a film forming polymer selected from liquid and carrier-reducible film forming polymers; and (c) a carrier material. The liquid coating composition can be solvent-based or aqueous based and can additionally contain at least on pigment. The liquid coating composition can be coated onto plastic substrates to improve the adhesion of subsequently applied coatings and to substantially improve the solvent resistance, especially to gasoline, of the finally coated plastic part.

A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the base coat. The transparent topcoat composition is a flexible, curable film-forming composition comprising (i) a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## (ii) a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester polymer, a polyurethane polymer, an acrylic polymer, and mixtures thereof wherein each polymer contains a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure depicted above; and (iii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the film-forming composition contains a polyester polymer derived from a cycloaliphatic acid or anhydride.

The flexible, multi-component composite coating compositions provide improved durability, water spotting resistance, and/or acid etch resistance, making the composite coatings particularly useful for plastic automotive parts.
