Patent number: 6748376Abstract: A method and apparatus are described to perform cascading search methodologies records in a database. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving a free-form search string, comprising one or more search terms, from a user, searching a database to identify records in the database containing the search string, if no data records are identified, searching the database by applying an ordered sequence of search algorithms to identify data records containing strings similar to the search string, and to display the identified records.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Requisite Technology, Inc.Inventors: Christopher Wade Beall, Michael Renn Neal, James Michael Wilmsen

Patent number: 6726947Abstract: An improved process for providing an individually customized fresh brewed coffee beverage on demand by a consumer, in a wide range of variety and strength. Said brewing process for making relatively large quantities of fresh brewed coffee beverages (in particular customized as to desired variety, body, character and/or strengths) as chosen by multiple individual consumers just prior to their consumption, with the system being easy to use by the consumer or other individual (i.e., restaurant wait staff) obtaining the customized beverage. Further, maintenance of the equipment requires only a small amount of personal attention by the owner/operator of the equipment. “Delayed dilution” of a concentrated extract to provide a beverage brewing system which immediately (upon customer selection) provides selective dilution (based on individual consumer's selections) of a fresh brewed coffee extract after the extract has been allowed to brew and held as an extract before dilution.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2000Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: The Procter & Gamble Co.Inventors: Roger William Gutwein, Christopher Wade Connor

Publication number: 20040065437Abstract: A mandrel housing for permanently deploying a seismic sensor or sensor apparatus down a well is disclosed. The mandrel is formed integral with or attached to a pipe and is incorporatable into the production piping string. The outer diameter of the mandrel is designed to be slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the well casing which allows the mandrel to naturally come into contact with the well casing at points of deviation, non-linearity, or non-verticality in the casing. This mechanical coupling of the mandrel to the well casing, and hence the earth formation, improves the resolution and type of seismic signals to be detected by the sensor apparatus. The sensor apparatus fits into a groove on the mandrel and is preferably clamped or welded into place or placed within a tunnel formed in the mandrel. The mandrel further preferably contains channels on its side to allow materials within the annulus to flow around the mandrel even when the mandrel is in contact with the casing.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 6, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Applicant: Weatherford/Lamb Inc.Inventors: Francis X. Bostick,, Brock Williams, Brian Hornby, Christopher Wade Mayeu, Keith Robert Morley

Patent number: 6697799Abstract: The present invention allows an item to automatically be classified using its attributes based on a classification schema and a knowledge base. The invention can include selecting a first attribute of the item, designating a first search strategy comprising the value of the first attribute applied to operate upon data records in a first database, selecting a second attribute of the item; designating a second search strategy comprising the value of the second attribute applied to operate upon a second subset of data records in a second database, forming a search hierarchy comprised of the first search strategy followed by the second search strategy, executing the search hierarchy, and selecting at least one classification for the item based on the search.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2002Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Requisite Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael Renn Neal, James Michael Wilmsen, Christopher Wade Beall

Publication number: 20030179107Abstract: A Smart Parking Meter System makes it possible to track whether or not a vehicle occupies parking meter stalls and whether or not the time has expired. The system uses a wireless communication protocol which may be of the type known under the trade mark “Bluetooth” and provides the portability of embedded systems and the convenience of personal digital assistants with the powers of the C and Java programming languages. There are two main components to the Smart Parking Meter System, the handheld device, or the PDA, and the actual parking meters. Each device has the Smart Parking Meter System application installed in it, as well as the wireless modules, such as Bluetooth to use as a communication medium. The parking meters also have a motion sensor to detect any movement within it view range. The handheld device is able to extract all the parking states for each parking meter within a block or street depending on user configuration of system.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2002Publication date: September 25, 2003Inventors: Sami Kibria, Joseph Chai-Wan Wu, Jose Alejandro Rueda, Nicholas Christopher Wade Thiessen, Christopher Troy Kavanagh, Pau Serge Card

Patent number: 6584462Abstract: An electronic catalog search engine is configurable to optimize the search process by identifying the desired item from the most advantageous supplier, while efficiently utilizing computing resources. The search engine comprises a configurable search and data subset creation mechanism. The system accepts search terms from a user, and then executes a sequence of search strategies on subsets of the database which may include a proximity search, a word count search, and a fuzzy logic search. Subsets can be searched in any order and different search strategies can be applied to different subsets. The sequences are terminated when search steps have uncovered at least one match. Each database entry has a corresponding product category. A list of categories from each of the matching products is dynamically compiled and displayed to the user. The user can page through the list of displayed matches, or alternatively can create a subset of the list by selecting only the items within one of the categories.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2001Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Requisite Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael Renn Neal, James Michael Wilmsen, Christopher Wade Beall

Patent number: 5469440Abstract: A TPON network in which the multiframe format includes a control portion, and a traffic portion. In the control portion the control word for each outstation is in the form of a respective group of contiguous bits. In the traffic portion, which is constituted by a series of traffic frames, the traffic information in each traffic frame for each outstation is in the form of a respective group of contiguous bits. Such a multiframe format enables the use of single-transducer transceiver in the outstations, and compared with known TPON multiframe formats increases the maximum operating range for the network beyond which transmit/receive conflict will occur.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1993Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Assignee: British TelecommunicationsInventor: Christopher A. Patent number: 4849960Abstract: An optical transmission system comprises a plurality of transducers located at intervals along a continuous optical fibre data transmission path. Data signals are derived from respective transmitters associated with the transducers and are applied to the transducers to produce mechanical stressing or deformation of the data transmission path optical fibre for imparting corresponding modulation of the polarization state of light being propagated along the optical fibre. A receiver connected to the far end of the transmission path includes means for determining the exact state of polarization of the received light and for extracting the modulation information and hence transmitted data therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1987Date of Patent: July 18, 1989Assignee: Plessey Overseas LimitedInventors: John P.
