Patent number: 7967794Abstract: A safety needle assembly comprises a cannula holding member, a cannula fixed to the cannula holding member, and a safety device mounted on the cannula holding member. The cannula holding member includes one or more outwardly directed fins extending longitudinally along at least a portion of the cannula holding member. The safety device includes a collar adapted to be mounted on the cannula holding member and a sheath. The sheath possesses an interior bounded by a back wall and a pair of oppositely positioned side walls, and also includes an opening positioned opposite the back wall. The sheath is also provided with at least one fin engaging member connected to the back wall and extending from the back wall in a direction toward the opening. The fin engaging member is spaced from the side walls of the sheath.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2009Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: Terumo Medical CorporationInventors: Christopher Bosel, Mark Sprinkle

Patent number: 7722572Abstract: A safety needle assembly includes a needle holder assembly, a cannula fixed to the needle holder assembly, a protector positioned over the cannula and removable to expose the cannula, and a sheath. The sheath is pivotally mounted on the needle holder assembly to permit the sheath to be pivoted relative to the needle holder assembly in a direction toward the cannula from a non-covering position in which the cannula is exposed after removal of the protector to a covering position in which the cannula is covered by the sheath. The sheath can also be provided with flat surfaces adapted to successively engage a portion of the needle holder assembly as the sheath is pivoted relative to the needle holder assembly. The needle holder assembly can include a tubular syringe barrel or a tubular needle holder adapted to receive an evacuated tube.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2004Date of Patent: May 25, 2010Assignee: Terumo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Mark Sprinkle, Masahiko Kobayashi, Christopher Bosel

Publication number: 20080058702Abstract: An assembly and method for continuous blockage of a nerve in a patient. The assembly includes a needle comprising a hollow needle conduit having a shaft portion and a tip portion, a generally non-conductive layer disposed along a length of the conduit shaft portion, and an echogenic surface extending along at least a portion of the needle. A catheter having a bore for transmittal of an anesthetic to the nerve is receivable in the shaft portion of said needle. Following insertion of the needle tip in the vicinity of the nerve by electrical nerve stimulation and ultrasound visualization, the catheter is passed through the needle conduit such that the distal end of the catheter extends beyond the distal tip of the needle. The catheter has an echogenic portion, such as a ribbon wrapped around the distal end of the catheter, and the catheter echogenic portion is guidable in the vicinity of the nerve under ultrasound imaging.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2007Publication date: March 6, 2008Applicant: Cook Critical Care IncorporatedInventors: George Arndt, Christopher Bosel
