Patent number: 6769173Abstract: An electrical connector crimping die comprises a first section for removably connecting the die to an electrical connector compression tool. A second section of the die, which is connected to the first section, is provided for crimping a connector. The second section comprises a generally concave crimp projection of a given height which defines a primary crimp surface and at least one concave shaped secondary pre-crimp surface. The secondary pre-crimp surface is recessed relative to the primary crimp surface by the given height. The primary crimp surface and the secondary pre-crimp surface are arranged relative to the first section so that a major portion of a crimping force applied by the compression tool to the crimping die is applied to the primary crimp surface to crimp a first portion of the connector and so that a minor portion of the crimping force is applied to the secondary pre-crimp surface to pre-crimp a second portion of the connector. A hydraulic crimping tool employs such a crimping die.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2001Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: FCI Americas Technology, Inc.Inventor: Christopher G. Chadbourne

Patent number: 6768059Abstract: An electrical connector crimping tool die set for crimping an asymmetrical electrical connector onto at least one electrical conductor. The die set includes a first crimping die adapted to be removably mounted to a crimping tool; and a second crimping die adapted to be removably mounted to a movable ram of the crimping tool opposite the first die. The second die includes a generally convex shaped rear side and a generally concave shaped front side. The front side forms a crimping groove with a center axis that is offset from a center axis of the generally convex shaped rear side. The asymmetrical electrical connector can be crimped between the first and second dies at an angle to a center axis of movement of the ram to provide a direction of crimp force substantially along or parallel to the center axis of movement of the ram.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2002Date of Patent: July 27, 2004Assignee: FCI Americas Technology, Inc.Inventors: John D. Patent number: 6668613Abstract: A transmission for connecting a rotary motor output shaft to a rectilinear actuator which is moveable rectilinearly along an actuator axis of translation. The transmission comprises a frame, an eccentric, and a rectilinear guide. The frame has a bore formed therein. The eccentric is adapted to position the frame on the rotary motor output shaft. The eccentric is rotatably mounted in the bore of the frame to rotate relative to the frame. The rectilinear guide is connected to the frame. The rectilinear guide has a slide surface adapted to be slidably seated against the rectilinear actuator allowing the frame to slide substantially rectilinearly relative to the rectilinear actuator. While this drive is especially suited for use on a hydraulic crimping tool, the drive is also suited for use with any kind of hydraulic power tool.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2002Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: FCI Americas Technology, Inc.Inventors: John D. Patent number: 6666064Abstract: A hydraulic tool having a frame, and a movable adapter. The frame defines a workspace with an anvil adapter at one end and a substantially flat face guide surface on one side of the workspace. The movable adapter is used for working a piece in the workspace against the anvil adapter. The movable adapter is movably mounted to the frame to move in the workspace relative to the frame along an axis of translation. The movable adapter has a substantially flat face seating surface seated against the guide surface of the frame. When the movable adapter is moved, the seating surface of the movable adapter rides upon the guide surface. Patent number: 5611229Abstract: A crimping tool comprises a pair of handles, cooperating metal jaws, dies, and/or die nests positioned at one end of the handles, and in alignment with each other, to receive a connector therebetween. Strengthening metal links and bolts secure the cooperating dies to the handles, so that the operation of the handles forces the jaws toward each other to impart radially directed crimping force to the connector. The handles are molded of an impact resistant plastic, and a unique, hourglass-shaped indicator link, formed of aluminum, a composite plastic, or other another material, may be incorporated into each handle near its upper end. A larger hole may be defined near the upper, exposed end of each link, while a smaller hole is defined near the lower end of each link, which is encased in plastic.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: Burndy CorporationInventors: Christopher G. Chadbourne, Gary E. Schrader, Mark W. Blake
