Patent number: 9094979Abstract: Techniques for selecting a serving sector for a terminal based on server selection information in order to balance the load of sectors in a wireless communication system are described. The server selection information for each sector may be set based on the load of the sector and may be used to rank the sector for selection as a serving sector. In one design, a terminal may receive server selection information for multiple sectors. The server selection information for each sector may include an offset used to adjust a measurement made by the terminal for the sector, a priority of the sector for selection as a serving sector, a DRCLock set based on the load of the sector, etc. The terminal may determine received signal qualities of the sectors. The terminal may then select one of the sectors as a serving sector based on the server selection information and the received signal qualities of the sectors.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2009Date of Patent: July 28, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Ramin Rezaiifar, Rashid Ahmed A. Patent number: 9055545Abstract: Techniques for improving the capacity of a wireless communications system using interference cancellation (IC). In an early decoding and IC aspect, a frame transmitted from a user to a base station may be decoded prior to the entire frame being received by the base station. The remaining portion of the frame may then be re-constructed at the base station prior to its reception, and cancelled from the receive signal to reduce the interference to frames received from other users. In a power control aspect for early decoding and IC, the power control target level at a local base station may be adjusted in response to successfully early decoding a frame, without affecting the overall outer loop power control operation. Further aspects include late decoding techniques for utilizing the IC of other users' signals to improve the probability of decoding a given user's frames, as well as techniques for traffic channel demodulation using channel re-estimation.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2013Date of Patent: June 9, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Peter J. Black, Christopher G. Lott, Rashid A. Attar, Yu-Cheun Jou, Jun Ma

Patent number: 8797911Abstract: A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes establishing a circular buffer configured to maintain a number of most recently encountered frame delay times and waiting a frame delay time after receiving a further frame before the station enters a power save state. Frame delay time is a period equal to a largest most recently encountered frame delay period in the circular buffer. The method further determines, at a station, a dormancy time based on a number of data frames received since the station transitioned from an inactive mode to an active mode, a packet transmission rate, and a data frame time interval representing time between data frames received at the station, and causes the station to switch to a further inactive mode if a next packet is not received within the dormancy time after receipt of a previous packet.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2012Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Linhai He, Rashid A. Attar, Christopher G. Lott, Donna Ghosh, Chaitanya Mannemala, Sunit Bhatia, Sudheer Konda, Gopal Chillariga

Patent number: 8792407Abstract: A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes, when no reverse link traffic exists and no forward link traffic has been received for a predetermined amount of time, establishing, at a terminal, a reverse link transmission pilot signal duty cycle, and boosting overhead channel signal transmission power during ON slots and gating overhead channel and pilot signal transmission power during OFF slots. The design further includes estimating, at the terminal, an available data transmission rate, determining an actual data transmission rate, setting a terminal transmission duty cycle for a next period based on the estimated available data transmission rate, the actual data transmission rate, and a margin of error, and transmitting data from the terminal according to the terminal transmission duty cycle.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2012Date of Patent: July 29, 2014Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Jun Hu, Donna Ghosh, Christopher G. Patent number: 8116283Abstract: An Access Network (AN) can send an acknowledge message (ACK) to an Access Terminal (AT) to indicate that the AN has successfully decoded the data received in the first set of slots of the first data packet. The AN can send a negative acknowledge message (NAK) to the AT to indicate that the AN has not successfully decoded the data received in the first set of slots of a first data packet. Based upon receipt of the NAK, the AT can resend the data by sending a second set of slots of the first data packet containing redundant data. Based upon receipt of the ACK, the AT can send a first set of slots of another packet. The AT can gate off for a predetermined period of time after sending the first set of slots of a first packet and before sending a next set of slots.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2009Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Peter J. Patent number: 8000284Abstract: An access terminal (206) configured for wireless communication with an access network (204) within a sector (1032). The access terminal (206) includes a transmitter (2608) for transmitting a reverse traffic channel to the access network (204), an antenna (2614) for receiving signals from the access network (204), a processor (2602) and memory (2604) in electronic communication with the processor (2602). Instructions stored in the memory (2604) implement a method of determining whether a current power allocation grant (1374) for a flow (1216) on the access terminal (206) has been received from the access network (204). If the current power allocation grant (1374) is still active, a current power allocation (1338a) for the flow is set equal to the current power allocation grant (1374). If the current power allocation grant (1374) has not been received, the current power allocation (1338a) for the flow is determined.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2004Date of Patent: August 16, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Christopher G. Instructions stored in the memory (2604) implement, for each flow (1216) of a plurality of flows on the access terminal (206), determining the flow's total available power (1238). The access terminal's total available power (1234) is determined by summing each flow's total available power (1238). A packet is transmitted to the access network (204) at a power level that does not exceed the access terminal's total available power (1234).Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2004Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Christopher G.
