  • Patent number: 7617914
Abstract: A brake drum that converts kinetic and potential energy into frictional heat without developing destructively high temperatures and provides such performance at a reduced weight with an increase in cooling effectiveness through the use of a squealer band positioned on the centerline of the drum braking surface along with axial cooling fins radiating therefrom and windows on the wraparound portion abutting mounting face.

  • Publication number: 20080308364
Abstract: A novel brake drum includes one or more mid-positioned squealer bands that are roughly in line with the ribs of the brake shoes. This places the most rigid part of the brake drum and the location of greatest heat sink over the most rigid portion of the brake shoes, which is also the position of greatest heat input. The axial cooling fins radiating from the squealer band aid in dissipating the heat from friction generated during the braking cycle.
