    Abstract: A low cost disposable reamer shaft is made from a rod or tube stock of stainless steel, Nitinol or fiber reinforced polymer having a precise outer diameter in the range of 4 to 14 millimeter and is cut to a shaft length of 250 to 400 millimeters. An attachment piece with male or female thread matching a spherical hollow or tapered hollow reamer is machined and glued with epoxy on one end of the rod of tube stock using a precision centerline aligning jig. An attachment piece for connecting to a drive power unit is machined and glued with epoxy to the other end of the rod or tube stock thus forming a low cost disposable reamer shaft that aligns the centerline of the shaft with that of the reamer. The shaft contacts the reamer at two attachment locations that are displaced from each other, providing precise centerline alignment.

    Abstract: A femoral stem for canines or humans is made bone-compliant by use of a thick sintered titanium body in a proximal bone contacting region and a polymeric or ceramic body in a distal bone contacting region of the femoral stem. An elastic modulus is thereby engineered to match that of bone tissue. The porous sintered titanium body is created by sintering spheres of titanium. It is bonded to a central solid biocompatible metallic body by diffusion bonding. The distal region has a biocompatible polymeric body or biocompatible cement body. When compression molded the distal region develops an elastic modulus matching that of bone tissue. The proximal region has a porosity designed to encourage bone ingrowth.

    Abstract: A femoral hip stem explant system has an alignment body which is attached to two locations of a femoral bone and has several lockable collet type adjustment features to set the shaft of a reamer or end mill exactly in coincidence with the femoral bone cavity axis. The shaft of the end mill or reamer is supported by a sleeve member, which is inserted into a drill guide central aperture. The drill guide aperture is adjusted first and locked to be in line with the femoral bone cavity. Each of the sleeve members has the same mating outer diameter, which fits into the drill guide central aperture. Accordingly, the sleeve members can be interchanged into the drill guide aperture with shafts of differently sized reamers or end mills.

    Abstract: A load bearing implant comprising a femoral implant stem made from a bio-compatible metal having an elastic modulus far greater than that of natural bone. When the implant heals within a bone cavity, the implant essentially carries substantially the entire load. Transfer of load to the surrounding bone tissue is lost due to lack of use after healing. Flexing a stiff implant applies a large load at the implant distal end. The bone cortex is thereby allowed to thicken, causing thigh pain long after implant healing. The femoral implant has a bone ingrowth coating on the proximal end, allowing firm attachment of the implant in the bone cavity. The distal end has a central aperture and a helical machined groove that permits flexing of the distal portion of the femoral implant stem. This flexing occurs in a manner similar to surrounding bone tissue, preventing thigh pain.

    Abstract: An interlocking nail having an hour-glass geometry is used for repair of bone fractures. The hour-glass interlocking nail includes a proximal section, a mid section, and a distal section. Each section of the hour-glass interlocking nail has a diameter. The proximal and distal sections each have a diameter larger than the mid section so that the interlocking nail has an hour-glass geometry. The hour-glass interlocking nail comprises at least one fixation aperture located within either the proximal or distal section of the hour-glass interlocking nail. Preferably, the fixation aperture has a tapered locking design adapted to receive a screw-cone peg. The hour-glass geometry utilized by the interlocking nail is better suited to address a larger population of bone canal geometries, stressing the fracture site with known values within the healing process and preventing inadvertent perforation of the nail through the cortex of the bone.
