  • Publication number: 20140105085
Abstract: Access terminals are adapted to facilitate discontinuous transmission (DTX). According to one example, an access terminal can employ a short timescale DTX mode and a long timescale DTX mode independent of one another. The access terminal can determine whether a first set of predetermined factors are present. When the first set of factors are determined to be present, the access terminal may enable a short timescale DTX mode, independent of whether a long timescale DTX mode is enabled or not. A determination may also be made whether a second set of predetermined factors are present. When the second set of predetermined factors are determined to be present, the access terminal may enable a long timescale DTX mode, independent of whether the short timescale DTX mode is enabled or not. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also included.

  • Publication number: 20130301437
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for adapting the power of an access probe transmission, in accordance with a reverse link underload indicator provided by the base station. In one example, the base station can transmit a one-bit reverse link underload indicator as an information element broadcasted within a general page message (GPM). Here, the reverse link underload indicator can indicate whether a measured rise-over-thermal (RoT) at the base station is less than a given threshold. The access terminal may accordingly reduce the initial transmit power of an access probe transmission in the case of a reverse link underload condition, as this condition would indicate that the base station could accommodate reduced power access probe transmissions without substantially decreasing the probability of a quick detection of the access attempt. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and described.

  • Patent number: 8553712
Abstract: Carrier management in a wireless communication device assigned a set of two or more carriers by a wireless communication network is disclosed. In one aspect, a method of carrier management includes transmitting data over the wireless communication network on one or more carriers forming a subset of active carriers from the set of carriers assigned to the wireless communication device. A first performance metric is determined indicative of operating conditions across the set of carriers assigned to the wireless communication device. A desired number of carriers on which to transmit data based on the first performance metric is determined. The desired number of carriers on which to transmit data is compared with the number of carriers in the subset of active carriers. The subset of active carriers is dynamically adjusted based on the comparison and subsequent data is transmitted over the wireless communication network using the adjusted subset of active carriers.

  • Patent number: 8554258
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, an apparatus and a method are provided for controlling reverse link interference among access terminals that are power controlled by a sector of a base station. In an embodiment, the maximum effective noise power spectral density is used as a parameter for controlling the level of reverse link loading, by setting a reverse activity bit (RAB) to signal the access terminals to reduce their data rates in order to minimize interference between the access terminals if the maximum effective noise power spectral density is above a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 8548383
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate adjusting power spectrum density (PSD) for wireless devices according to multiple possible step sizes. A step size for an adjustment can be selected based at least in part on a received overload indicator from one or more access points, a PSD required to achieve a target signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) for a wireless device, and a PSD previously assigned to the wireless device. Once the step size is selected, it can be applied to the previous PSD to generate a new PSD for the wireless device, and the wireless device can accordingly adjust PSD to mitigate inter-cell interference with the one or more access points.

  • Publication number: 20130252609
Abstract: Access terminals are adapted to communicate with registration servers to enable a registration server to perform timer-based registrations on behalf of an access terminal. The access terminal can cease performing such timer-based registrations as long as the registration server performs the registrations, and may power down until event data is available for transmission or reception. When a registration server performs timer-based registrations on behalf of an access terminal, the registration server can periodically communicate with a network entity to conduct the timer-based registrations for the access terminal. The network entity can receive a timer-based registration message from a registrations server for registering an access terminal. In response to such a message, the network entity can register the access terminal. Sensors and controllers may be used with some embodiments to collect and analyze data and for potentially taking action.

  • Patent number: 8514711
Abstract: The disclosure relates to reverse link lower layer assisted video error control. A method may encode video data, form a packet with the encoded video data, and transmit the packet across a wireless channel to an access network. A medium access control (MAC) layer may receive a negative acknowledgement (NAK) from the access network. The method may determine whether the received NAK is associated with a packet that contains video data. If the received NAK is associated with a packet that contains video data, the method may perform error control.
