Patent number: 9828304Abstract: Disclosed herein are pyrophoric composite materials comprising nanoporous pyrophoric alpha iron nanoparticles dispersed in a ceramic matrix for use as aerial decoys. The composite material is prepared using tape casting methods to produce a thin film. The iron precursor in the film is then activated by reduction under a hydrogen atmosphere. The composite nanoporous pyrophoric alpha iron nanoparticles and ceramic material is an improvement over current pyrophoric decoys as it eliminates the use of harmful chemicals and the need for a substrate to support the composite.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2016Date of Patent: November 28, 2017Assignee: The United States of America as Represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Christopher Haines, Kendall Mills, Juan Patino, Zac Doorenbos, Jan Puszynski

Patent number: 8623156Abstract: An improved method for the production of pyrophoric materials which does not employ hot NaOH and produces pyrophoric materials on various types of ceramic, metal, nanomaterial substrates. The method impregnates the substrate materials with pyrophoric iron or other materials resulting in materials that are “tunable” with respect to its pyrophoric output as determined by its temperature, rise time sustenance etc through selective variation of particle size, morphology, and diluents or reactive materials.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2011Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Assignees: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army, South Dakota Board of RegentsInventors: Christopher Haines, Deepak Kapoor, Jan Puszynski, Rajesh Shende, Zac Doorenbos, Lori Groven

Publication number: 20050225972Abstract: A luminaire optical system (10) for an indirect light source including a tubular lamp (12) having a longitudinal axis (22), a first reflector assembly (14) extending parallel to and radially spaced directly above said lamp and a second reflector assembly (16) parallel to and radially spaced from said lamp directly below the lamp. Each of the assemblies includes symmetrical reflectors (22; 24; 30; 32) joining in an apex (26; 34) directly below and above the lamp. The bottom reflector (16) further may include two segments (30a; 30b; 32a; 32b) on each reflecting surface, the segments marking a sharp change in reflecting angle. Most such luminaires will typically also include perforations to maintain useful light profiles. The luminaire according to the present configuration increases the lighting efficiency by minimising any reflections passing back into the tube and ensuring an even spread of light throughout an area being illuminated.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2003Publication date: October 13, 2005Inventor: Christopher Haines

Publication number: 20050152824Abstract: A new class of nanostructured RE-doped SiO2-base materials that display superior fluorescence properties is provided. In particular, high gain combined with a broad and flat spectral band width is observed in material composed of a high fraction of a nano-dispersed metastable silicate phase in a glassy SiO2 matrix, produced by partial devitrification (crystallization) of several glassy Al2O3/Er2O3- and Y2O3/Er2O3-doped SiO2 compositions. Also, a highly deconvoluted spectral emission, with several prominent peaks, is observed in completely devitrified material, consisting of a uniform nano-dispersion of an equilibrium silicate phase in a crystobalite SiO2 matrix. Such enhanced fluorescence properties were observed in heat treated nanopowders prepared by vapor-phase, solgel, rapid solidification, and spray-pyrolysis methods.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 5, 2005Publication date: July 14, 2005Inventors: Bernard Kear, Christopher Haines, George Sigel, Lisa Klein, Varadh Ranganathan
