Patent number: 10909999Abstract: In some implementations, a computing device can generate personalized music selections to associate with any collections of visual media (e.g., photos and videos) stored on the computing device. A user may prefer particular genres of music and listen to some genres more frequently than others. The computing device can create measures of the user's genre preferences and use these measures to select music that is preferred by the user and music that may be significant or relevant to the particular collection of visual media. The computing device may also determine music that was being played when and where the visual media were being created. The computing device may store the visual media and music items in association with each other. The computing device may generate composite media items that combine the visual media and music items. When the visual media are viewed, the selected music item is also played.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2020Date of Patent: February 2, 2021Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Patrick H. Kelly, Sabrine Rekik, Eric Circlaeys, Zachary H. Smith, Christopher J. Moulios

Patent number: 8538761Abstract: Techniques are described to allow a user of a signal editing tool to “stretch” or “shrink” a selected portion of a recorded signal to change the length of the selected portion of the signal relative to a particular domain, without stretching or shrinking other parts of the signal. In the context of audio signals, techniques are provided to allow a user to “time stretch” an audio signal file to change the duration of the stretched portion of the audio. The user may select how the change affects the total duration of the audio signal. Options are provided for “shifting” the non-selected portion of the signal, or for not shifting the non-selected portion of the signal. When the non-selected portion is not shifted, the signal editing tool automatically generates audio for the gap (for shrinking operations), and automatically deletes audio that overlaps with the stretched portion (for stretching operations).Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2005Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Moulios, Nikhil M. Bhatt

Patent number: 8411876Abstract: Techniques for introducing background noise segments into signal data are provided. The background noise segments are constructed from a background noise print extracted from the signal data. The background noise print may be user specified, or automatically identified by the signal editing tool. The background noise print may be stored with, and subsequently loaded as part of, the project associated with a signal. The background noise segments that are generated based on the background noise print may have different durations than the background noise print itself.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2010Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Moulios, Nikhil M. Bhatt

Patent number: 8364294Abstract: Tools and techniques are provided to allow the user of a signal editing application to retain control over individual changes, while still relieving the user of the responsibility of manually identifying problems. Specifically, tools and techniques are provided which separate the automated finding of potential problems from the automated correction of those problems. Thus, editing is performed in two phases, referred to herein as the “analysis” phase and the “action” phase. During the analysis phase, the signal editing application automatically identifies target areas within the signal that may be of particular interest to the user. During the “action” phase, the user is presented with the results of the analysis phase, and is able to decide what action to take relative to each target area.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2005Date of Patent: January 29, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Moulios, Nikhil M. Bhatt

Patent number: 7580954Abstract: Techniques for changing operations performed relative to digital signal data that represents a recording of a signal are provided. A digital signal data-editing program displays an ordered list of items. Each item in the list corresponds to one or more operations that a user has instructed the program to perform relative to the digital signal data. The order of the items in the list determines the order in which the operations corresponding to those items are performed relative to the digital signal data. In response to user input, the program may perform a change such as inserting a new item into the list, removing an existing item from the list, altering the order of one or more items in the list, etc. The program subsequently modifies the display of the list to reflect the change. The change may be performed without disturbing the last-ordered item in the list.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2005Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Moulios, Nikhil M. Bhatt, Curtis A. Bianchi, Albert Riley Howard, Jr.

Patent number: 7254455Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method of determining one or more periods of recurring events within a recorded signal, such as, music. This method can include establishing one or more anchor points in the recorded signal where an anchor point is indicative of a beginning point for a period of recurring events in the recorded signal, determining a length for the period of recurring events in the recorded signal where the length starts from the established anchor point and defines a first loop, and refining the length for the period of recurring events by comparing the first loop with subsequent loops. The subsequent loops have the length of the first loop.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2001Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: Sony Creative Software Inc.Inventor: Christopher J. Moulios

Synchronization of music and video generated by simultaneously executing processes within a computer
Patent number: 5265248Abstract: The invention relates to the synchronization of multi-media events on a computer. A computer of limited core or random access memory makes it difficult to run concurrently various media processes, such as video, music, and titling. The invention provides a way of loading such processes into such memory so as to approximate optimally the desired synchronized production when such processes are played. The invention also provides a way of parameterizing the play of the video process to the play of the music process.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1990Date of Patent: November 23, 1993Assignee: Gold Disk Inc.Inventors: Christopher J.
