  • Patent number: 7222868
Abstract: A seating unit includes a seat, a back, and a support structure supporting the seat and the back. A wheelchair base frame includes a beam extending transversely across the wheelchair base frame. An adjustable extendable column extends between the beam and the support structure for adjustably supporting the seating unit on the wheelchair base frame. The support structure and/or the transverse beam can be constructed to receive the same structure as is provided on a standard task chair. By this arrangement, a plurality of similar chairs can be ordered, some having standard bases and others having a wheelchair base. Concurrently, the seating unit with the wheelchair base can include substantially all options and styling offered in the standard task chair.

  • Patent number: 7048335
Abstract: A seating unit includes a base having a housing and support arms extending laterally on each side of the housing. A back frame is pivoted to the support arms on each side, and a slide slidably engages the housing. A seat-supporting structure includes a crossbar pivotally attached to the slide member at a first pivot location and side frame sections extending rearwardly from ends of the crossbar that are pivotally attached to the lower arms of the back at a second pivot location spaced horizontally from the first pivot locations to define a three-point support for a seat above the housing. A spring is operably coupled to the slide to bias the back and seat toward upright positions.

  • Publication number: 20040245841
Abstract: A seating unit includes a perimeter frame, a flexible seating surface supported by the frame, and parallel elongated resilient force-distributing members coupled to the seating surface to control a contour of the seating surface when supporting a seated user. The resilient force-distributing members are bendable along their length and are sufficient in number and distribution to substantially reduce localized deflection of the seating surface and thereby reduce pressure point contact felt by the seated user. The resilient force-distributing members can be wire rods, long strips, or other resilient material with memory.

  • Patent number: 6382719
Abstract: A back construction for seating includes a back frame having an elongated section and a non-uniformity caused by a molding gate in a center of the elongated section. An aesthetic cover is configured to overlay a portion of the elongated section and snappingly engages the elongated section to cover the non-uniformity. A back shell is connected to the back frame by a connection that includes internal connecting structure providing strength to the connection. A housing surrounds the internal connecting structure too provide an aesthetic appearance to the connection. The back shell has a channel defined along its bottom edge, and an elongated bracket has an intermediate section shaped to fit into the channel. The bracket is retained in the channel by a nose-shaped top edge and bottom screws, such that the bracket is easily assembled yet securely held.
