Abstract: The invention provides a device for the detection of elevated levels of radiation in remote locations, the device comprising a scintillator crystal and a variable length fibre optic cable. Preferably, the scintillator comprises an inorganic scintillator and the fibre optic cable comprises a metal coated fibre optic cable. The device preferably also comprises a light measurement device which co-operates with recording means such that the radiation levels of the environment in which the device is deployed may be determined. The device has potential widespread application in the nuclear industry, for the monitoring of products, processes and/or facilities that exhibit very high levels of radiation.
