  • Patent number: 8534424
Abstract: A turbocharger includes a housing, a rotating assembly mounted within the housing, a lubrication passage for admitting lubricating oil into the turbocharger, and a lube oil filter, mounted within a portion of the lubrication passage so that oil entering the turbocharger will pass through the lube oil filter, removing any contaminants arising from the engine's lubrication system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 10, 2008
Date of Patent: September 17, 2013
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
    Inventor: Christopher Kelly Palazzolo
  • Patent number: 8327817
Abstract: A bearing for an automotive engine includes a base having a first bearing segment formed therein, and a bearing cap removably mounted to the base, with the bearing cap including fastener towers in contact with the base. A second bearing segment extends between the fastener towers. A number of non-contact stiffening ribs extend parallel to the fastener towers. The stiffening ribs are attached to outboard portions of the fastener towers. The stiffening ribs cause the bearing cap to avoid excessive flexing and distortion, while at the same time avoiding fretting corrosion which would occur were the clamp loads of the cap to the base be reduced by materially increasing the size of the fastener towers.

  • Patent number: 8245511
Abstract: A turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine includes a turbocharger with a utility pedestal extending between the turbocharger and hard point associated with the cylinder block. The utility pedestal includes a mounting pad for attaching the combined turbocharger and pedestal assembly to an engine, as well as internal oil and coolant supply passages for supplying the turbocharger with coolant and lubricating oil under pressure.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: August 21, 2012
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Christopher Cowland, Patrick Sexton, Christopher Kelly Palazzolo, Anthony William Hudson
  • Patent number: 8234867
Abstract: A turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine includes a turbocharger with a utility pedestal extending between the turbocharger and the hard point associated with the cylinder block. The utility pedestal includes a mounting pad for attaching the combined turbocharger and pedestal assembly to an engine, as well as oil and coolant supply passages for supplying the turbocharger with coolant and lubricating oil under pressure. An internal, isolated, turbocharger oil drainback passage conducts waste oil from the turbocharger to a crankcase sump without permitting the waste oil to contact the engine's moving parts.

  • Patent number: 8209983
Abstract: A turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine includes a turbocharger with a utility pedestal extending between the turbocharger and a mounting point associated with the cylinder block. The utility pedestal includes a mounting pad for attaching the combined turbocharger and pedestal assembly to an engine, as well as oil and coolant supply passages for supplying the turbocharger with coolant and lubricating oil under pressure. The utility pedestal's fastening system is configured so as to cover a minimum amount of space of the engine surface to which the pedestal is mounted, so as to reduce the footprint of the turbocharger system.
