  • Patent number: 11455250
Abstract: An event that indicates unexpected shutdown of a hard disk drive is determined. The hard disk includes first and second controllers that control respective first and second independently-operable actuators. Each of the actuators has one or more heads that access one or more spinning disks of the hard disk drive. While receiving power for the hard disk drive via back-electromotive force of a motor driven by the one or more spinning disks in response to the event, the first and second controllers independently move the respective first and second actuators to safe positions. In response to determining the first and second actuators are in safe positions, write cache data associated with the first and second controllers is written to a non-volatile memory.

  • Patent number: 9045347
Abstract: A novel polycrystalline stoichiometric fine SiC fiber substantially free of impurities is produced using a novel pre-ceramic polymer. The pre-ceramic polymer is prepared by reacting a mixture of chlorodisilane, boron trichloride, and a vinyl chlorodisilane with an excess of hexamethyldisilazane to form the pre-ceramic polymer resin, which may then be melt-spun, cured, pyrolyzed and heat-treated to obtain the finished SiC fiber. The manufacturing process for the production of the fine SiC ceramic fiber allows for flexibility with respect to cross-linking, in that low-cost thermal treatments may replace more complex methods, while obtaining fibers with improved materials properties as compared to currently available SiC fibers.

  • Patent number: 6710567
Abstract: Method and apparatus for accelerating a disc drive spindle motor to an operational velocity at which data are transferred between a host device and a disc rotated by the spindle motor. The spindle motor is initially accelerated from rest to an intermediate velocity at which sufficient back electromotive force (bemf) is generated by the rotation of the spindle motor to enable commutation circuitry of the disc drive to time the application of drive pulses to the spindle motor. The spindle motor is subsequently accelerated from the intermediate velocity to the operational velocity by applying a velocity dependent reference profile which establishes a sequence of reference levels to control the flow of current through the spindle motor during acceleration. The sequence of reference levels have different magnitudes at different velocities of the spindle motor between the intermediate velocity and the operational velocity.
