    Abstract: Provided are compositions and methods for inhibiting growth of cancer cells. The method of the invention relates to delivering to cells an effective amount of a composition that contains a polynucleotide having a Rad51 promoter or a polynucleotide having at least 95% similarity to a Rad51 promoter. The Rad51 promoter is operably linked to a coding region for a cytotoxic agent. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrating effectiveness of the polynucleotides of the invention are presented.
