  • Patent number: 6043629
Abstract: A power system includes at least two battery cell modules. Each battery cell module has a lithium-ion battery cell, and a battery cell controller operably connected to the lithium-ion battery to control the charging and discharging of the lithium-ion battery cell. A central charge/discharge controller is operably connected to each of the battery cell controllers, allowing the charging and discharging of each lithium-ion battery cell to be individually controlled.

  • Patent number: 5754384
Abstract: An overcurrent protection circuit for protecting a boost-type non-isolated battery discharge controller from a fault current. The battery discharge controller includes multiple parallel-coupled power stages each having an input fuse and an output fuse having predetermined current ratings. The overcurrent protection circuit includes a resistor serially connected to an input of each of the output fuses of each of the power stages for limiting the fault current through each of the power stages to a predetermined level below the predetermined current ratings of the input and output fuses. The overcurrent protection circuit also includes a current bypass path for providing a current path around the power stages when the fault current exceeds the predetermined current ratings of the input and output fuses.

  • Patent number: 5504418
Abstract: According to the present invention a bus voltage limiter is connected between a photovoltaic solar panel array and a load to limit the output voltage to a fixed dc reference voltage. The limiter includes a pulse width modulator which controls the duty cycle of a power switch from 0% to 100% to maintain a substantially constant output voltage V.sub.ref. A coupled inductor type boost DC to DC converter includes a pair of main windings which cooperate with the duty cycle modulated power switch to provide the output voltage. An auxiliary winding provides input ripple current cancellation in conjunction with a second inductor and a dc blocking capacitor.

  • Patent number: 5122728
Abstract: A coupled inductor type boost DC to DC converter with a single multipurpose magnetic component. The invention includes a conventional switch for converting an input DC voltage to a signal having a time varying waveform. The switch Q1 has a pole terminal connected to a source of input voltage, a control terminal and first and second throw terminals. The single inductive element includes a first winding LN.sub.1 connected between an output terminal of the switch and an input terminal of the converter and a second winding LN.sub.2 connected between the second throw terminal of the switch and an output terminal of the converter. In a first embodiment, the invention further includes a winding LN.sub.3 of the inductive element connected at a first end to the control terminal of the switch which provides a level shifting circuit for shifting the level of a drive signal applied to the control terminal of the switch.
