The compositions comprise a first component described by the formula: M1SxSey:B1 and a second component that comprises a material described by the formula M2Am(SpSeq)n:B2, in which: M1 and M2 may be any metal species and B1 and B2 may be any activator, typically a metal species, with the remaining variables representing effective numerical values necessary for conferring electrical neutrality to the compositions. A phosphor mixture according to the invention is produced by first preparing individual components, and then physically mixing the components, as in a mortar or ball mill.
