    Abstract: A method for producing a soft convex adhesive wafer for attaching an ostomy appliance to a peristomal skin surface surrounding a stoma. In one embodiment, the method includes providing a resilient laminating pad adapted for being displaced to and fro in a laminating direction and that exerts a laminating pressure in the laminating direction, providing a plane counter-pressure surface at substantially right angles to the laminating direction, placing the wafer on the counter-pressure surface, and displacing the laminating pad in the laminating direction so that laminating pressure is exerted on an entire distal surface of the wafer by the laminating pad.

    Abstract: An adhesive wafer for attaching an ostomy appliance to a peristomal skin surface surrounding a stoma has an integrally molded adhesive layer made of a skin barrier material, a distal surface covered by a flexible backing layer, and a proximal bodyside surface contoured so the adhesive layer has a thin peripheral portion and thick central portion surrounding a stoma-receiving aperture. A set of at least two wafers is provided in one embodiment, wherein individual wafers have differing central portion surface topography, and different stoma receiving apertures. To produce a closely fitting wafer for a given stoma, a method of producing wafers includes providing a representation of the topography of the peristomal surface and the stoma, and, using the representation, manufacturing a mold having a surface configuration substantially matching the topography of the peristomal surface and stoma.

    Abstract: An orthotic pad is disclosed for reducing pressure and shear stresses on dermal and muscle tissue in treatment areas extending over bony prominences. This pad includes a hydrocolloid-containing adhesive body having oppositely-facing non-parallel first, and second major surfaces. The pad is formed of a soft, deformable and shape-recoverable adhesive material in which particles of at least one moisture-absorbing and moisture-swellable hydrocolloid material are dispersed. The first surface of the pad is contoured to match that of the treatment area for adhesively engaging and covering such area, and the second surface has a developed shape for corrective redistribution of external forces exertable against the treatment area to prevent further damage from pressure or shear forces, promote the healing process and, in appropriate cases, provide orthopedic correction.
