In one highly preferred form the layer is electroplated in a non-uniform manner such that high wear areas automatically receive an extra thickness of the chrome. The layer improves stain resistance and scratch resistance well beyond what conventional chromium mixed throughout the stainless steel itself will do. Processes for applying the layer are also described, as are the effects of different brushing finishes.
